I absolutely agree with the sentiment of at least waiting until next year to buy the next gen consoles, considering the lack of convincing exclusive-games even disregard Covid-delay, the availability for both consoles are a mess unless you want to pay scalpers some nice dough(which is great for both Microsoft and Sony, but a pain for casual gamers), so....might as well wait for one more year before jumping to the bandwagon, or as I have noticed recently, more people have actually start buying PS4 pro since the price went down quite a bit (then it went up again a bit due to demand)

Only reason I can see for buying a new console at launch is picking up Demon's Souls to get in on invasion and co-op with a fresh audience that missed out on the original. Although given how few PS5s will likely be floating around, it may not be active enough to matter.

Really though, I stopped buying consoles at launch ages ago since it takes time for a library to build and there is higher chance of manufacturing defects. Launch titles are frequently among the worst on offer as well. Maybe I'm getting old because the excitement of wanting to rush out to buy the next big thing day one just isn't enough to tempt me anymore.

The new consoles are just too large for me to physically fit near my monitor, so any thought of buying them will have to wait until I find a new job, move to a bigger living space, and buy new furniture.

There’s been a void quality with the Yuke’s developed WWE games since the first game all the way back on the PS1.

I'm also waiting to get either new console. I agree that there really isn't a good reason to get a new console at launch in general, and there's no killer app to change that this time around. I can see the argument of wanting to have a better experience with current gen titles (load times, frame rate etc), so while for me it's not quite worth it, I understand there are those that it is worth it for. I think for many though it's mainly FOMO.

It’s funny. Without the giant graphical leaps, it is hard for most to see the value in these next-gen consoles. It was never about the games. It has always been about better performing machines that can handle these massive games so we can stop spending so much of our playtime on loading screens and our eyes won’t burn from inconsistent frame rates.

Ironically, that makes these consoles more akin to upgrading a Master Race PC than getting a shiny new machine. The promise of performance is a big deal to me, but not to the point where I have to be an early system adopter. I can wait. Besides, I got the PS4 at launch and that system had nothing at the start. Took roughly 6+ months before anything really substantial released for it.

Also, Tekken 7’s new season is highlighted, but no mention of the early access controversy? Surprised that wasn’t touched on.

Even if I had the money to buy a new console I still would wait a while, it'll take some time for the new consoles to amass a good library of games, and I personally don't like the PS5 design so I hope that in two years Sony will make a Slim version. I'm also waiting for Nintendo to announce a successor for the Switch, be it an improved model or a true successor, and I hope that it will be backwards compatible.

I'm waiting to pick up a PS5 - at least until next year.

The last time that I got a system near launch was with the original DS. While it went on to have an amazing library, that first 6 months was really rough, with only one good game - the justifiably forgotten Feel the Magic XX/XY. For most of that time, it was a better GBA. I really could have held off until the library and availability where better.

This is a similar situation. There's one game that I really want to play on the PS5 (Miles Morales: Spider-Man), and I have a large PS4 backlog - there's no reason to update right now.

This is actually my first time buying a new console at launch. Since the backwards compatibility is so strong with this new generation, I figure I can sell the previous console for the most amount of money I'm likely to get, and largely treat the new console as an upgrade.

Its interesting seeing everyone in this thread being mostly on the side of waiting out until a worthwhile reason for upgrading to next gen comes out.

I managed to snag a pre-order and have had my PS5 for a day now. My reasoning was that while I didn't have any killer PS5 game to purchase Day 1, I had PS4 games that I wanted to play in the best performance possible as I never got the PS4 Pro.

I'm happy with my purchase. I can play my PS4 games at 60 fps with HDR (as long as they have support to do that), I've got the free Astro's Playroom which does a full showcase of the capabilities and future potential of the DualSense controller with getting the platinum easier than ever thanks to the fast load times of the SSD, and in addition my brother can play Demon's Souls at launch. Its a win-win for me.

Got the series x at launch and have been very happy with it thus far. The quick resume feature microsoft came up with is no joke. Been primarily playing destiny 2 beyond light since the dlc came out the same day at launch and while it is definitely more gorgeous when previously played on the original Xbox one model im excited to see the optimizations for it coming in december. Start up time has been great. The console doesn't appear to get that hot either.

I honestly couldn't care less about the PS5 or the new Xbox. As far as I'm concerned, the PC has already more than proven that it can handle the playing of current titles as well as retro titles. Coupled with the fact that famous titles that appeared on Sony and Microsoft consoles are now or later appearing on Steam and GOG, I honestly don't see a reason to invest in consoles anymore.

As someone who also prefers gaming on PC these days, there is one point to consoles: exclusives. There are games that will not see a PC release anytime soon, if ever.

I got as far as having a PS5 in my cart before the website told me it was actually out of stock. I'm not all that bother by it since the only game I would get right now is DMC5 Special Edition, and that is just a nicer version of a game I already have. The main reason I went through the effort of trying is because it wouldn't surprise me if scalpers continue to be a problem. For some reason, people lack the willpower to wait and buy at regular price and will shell out 3-4x to get a new console even though it's obvious what is happening. Retailers seem to not care enough to have any meaningful safeguards against bots or obvious fishy orders. (Did NVidia really think actual customers were buying 20+ of the newest graphics cards the minute they were for sale?) And if manufacturers don't produce enough supply that stores have no problem maintaining stock, the scarcity plays right into scalpers' hands.

As much as I would probably enjoy enhanced PS4 games right now, it's not like they are unplayable with what I have, and I'm sure not paying anything more than MSRP.

You mean exclusives that people perpetually whine about online that should be released on other consoles on the grounds of better business interests? THOSE exclusives?

If the Switch continues to be popular in its current iteration that it can hold its own against the PS5 and Xbox, then there is no reason for Nintendo to put out a new console for at least until the 5th year after the Switch's initial release. The last thing we need is another "Wii U" disaster.

Wrong. DEAD wrong. It's about both the console and the games in tandem. While yes, you DO need a system with greater specs than its predecessor to attract the gaming patron, it's all meaningless without an attractive gaming library. Right now, it's going to take more than just Demon Souls to get people to buy the PS5, if at all.
