And here I thought that Miyazaki-sensei always had a distaste for CGI animation. Disappointing that they're going down this road. I've never been a fan of CGI animation.

How so? I'm not even Japanese. What Ghibli is doing here is throwing away their recognisable style for a dime a dozen style. |

It's been five years since this news came out: https://www.wired.co.uk/article/hayao-miyazaki-latest-film-cgi-caterpillar I don't even consider myself a true fan of him or Ghibli outside Nausicaa. Maybe I can gatekeep both of us as "not real fans" at the same time

I'm still going to give it a chance, but like what was mentioned in the other thread, one form of animation shouldn't be tossed out in favor of another.

So, you'd be equally against it if a 3D CG studio started making 2D hand-drawn? I'm sorry, I don't believe that.
I inevitably think of metalheads reacting to a metal band putting out a softer album. Metal is perceived like an endangered species, and every band making good music is precious, so how dare this band put out a pop album? They're betraying us, their loyal supporters, by selling out to the disgusting mainstream. Normally I try to give the benefit of the doubt, that the artists actually wanted to try playing a different kind of music. I might like it or I might not. There are bands I wish still put out music like they did 10-15 years ago. Those bands always have an online chorus of disgruntled fans, which it's seldom worth adding to. As for this movie, I'm not optimistic that I'll like it. I hope it was at least faster and easier to make than is usual for Ghibli, though I've heard that for a good quality CG film, that's surprisingly not the case. |

Part of the reason why I am so disappointed in this movie's animation style is because I recall Miyazaki being so against CGI. I applauded Ghibili's determination to stay away from CGI and keep their studio traditional. Traditional style animation is a dying art, specially here in America. I just don't want Ghibli to turn out to be the next Pixar and ruin traditional animation like it did here in America. I'd be really sad to see traditional style in Japan die out too. |

That said, until I heard of this CG film, I figured Ghibli would at some point stop all production and turn entirely into a nostalgia-driven brand merchandising company. That's actually the worst possible outcome, though it would prevent the feeling of "this could have and should have been 2D hand-drawn," which is inevitable, whether true or not. |

I really should get around to buying this book; Diana Wynne Jones is my favourite author, though this is aimed at younger children than most of her works, and is by all accounts very short (144 pages). Sadly she died the same year it was published.
