Uhhh wow, this is kind of a huge deal. Olympic games are already a tough economic sell and the infrastructure investment already makes it incredibly difficult for any country to make the financial buy-in worthwhile under the best of circumstances...not allowing overseas spectators essential means these Olympics will be a economic failure before they even begin.

Finally, considering the way Japan was viewing these games (and the history of the Olympics within Japan as well) this just adds another layer. I hope the games can still be successful in some way, but history illustrates a different trend.

Why can't they just delay it another year when the virus will probably be gone by then hopefully?

I kinda figured that the IOC and Japan were going to play it safe and ban overseas spectators, just to be on the safe side if they did decide to host the games in 2021.

Though aside from the opening and closing ceremonies, including the parade of athletes, the smaller size of those in the stands won't really make much of a difference.

Now the real question is how bad is it going to financially hurt Japan for barring overseas spectators

I believe the international Olympics committee has ordered for the Tokyo Olympics to be canceled completely should it not be held this year.

They’re trying to recoup as much as they can despite it not being as profitable as it would have been.
This would have been the SECOND Tokyo Olympic Games canceled. I’m guessing they also don’t want that on their record.

The biggest reason is that most of the sports have schedules outside of the Olympics and rules about qualifying tournaments, etc.
Delay one year, and you can fudge things a bit, but delay two and you are getting into issues like giant tournaments overlapping and qualifiers not applying for years, etc... It becomes a scheduling nightmare for half the events.

This Olympics is going to be sad, especially for other nationality players, since they won't be getting any support from the audience.

The whole point of getting rights to host the Olympics, is to increase tourism. So Japan hosting the Olympics is basically now pointless, and are going to have to deal with a huge hole in their wallet.

Also Japan have always been very persistent until the end, I mean this is the same country that didn't go on lockdown even when the covid cases were crazily high. Cancelling/delaying the Olympics is a last result for them, kinda feel sorry for all those who paid tickets in advance and were looking forward to going to Japan for the Olympics.

And also because Paris was awarded the 2024 Olympic Games.
If there is no Tokyo games in 2021, IOC said they'll skip it to Paris.

I'm sure not as much as it would have if the games were cancelled completely. I'd take a one -year postponement and ban of overseas spectators over the games being called off any day of the week.

Also with the next Japanese general elections taking place later this year, you know this is going to be a major sticking point for them.
