that someone as repulsed by Tomozaki as Hinami is would ever devote so much of her time and energy to helping him improve himself.

Eh...this strikes me as the view of someone early on in the series. Hinami isn't a perfect girl. She's deeply flawed in her own ways. But the core concept of not waiting for someone to come around and change you is correct.

I think Hinami derives a lot of self-satisfaction and even pleasure from controlling Tomozaki's life. I see that as her primary motivation.

I'll just say that, even at 71 I found a lot to like in this show. It was an unexpected little gem. I'd like another season.

Exactly! Or should I say Hexactly? Hinami is basically treating Tomozaki like a player character. She's playing his life by proxy. Which is why when he pushes back or questions her methods, even a little bit, she shuts down and recedes. Hinami probably also sees herself in Tomozaki to a certain degree. Everything about her is manufactured, with the exception of her competitive streak and love of games.

But yeah, like the author of this article says, no perfect girl in real life is going to spend so much time helping a loser improve. But that's what should throw red flags up about Hinami.

It's funny to see someone only ten years older then me enjoying a series like this, because even though it's been over 40 years since I was in high school, things do not change; even in another country. There will always be anti-social teenagers dealing with other classmates who you don't relate to on a daily basis trying to figure out how to get through the day. I gravitate to these type of anime because it hits home most of the time. It wasn't until my senior year that I broke out of my shell, (was literally begged to play a part in the school play; it was the most fun I had) that I finally enjoyed high school and all that went with it. In fact, when it was getting down to the final days of my life in high school, I wished for it not to end. So watching a series like this and others that are similar, I re-live those days and pine, (man, I would love to have the chance to do school over like in Erased, or Re-Life). I'll be 70, 80, etc. and still watch good shows like this and continue to reminisce of that final year, smiling.

Despite almost dropping this after the first episode, this is the one anime I'm still thinking about from that season. Season 2 would be great.

I agree with that. Thought the first episode was pretty bad, but from the second episode onward the anime went through a whole redemption arc.
