I have to wonder if the story would be any less appealing if the synopsis read like this instead:

Meet Rio: a callous orphaned boy living in the slums. At only 7-years-old, he comes to learn that he possesses extremely potent magical abilities and uses his new powers to solve the kidnapping case of a little girl. His good deed is acknowledged, and he's rewarded by being enrolled into… a prestigious academy for noble children...?


But no, it has to be "Japanese person reincarnated in a fantasy world," this time apparently courtesy of Bus-san and Train-sama rather than Truck-kun. And the inclusion of Miharu Ayase (another victim of the accident?) suggests that Spirit Chronicles may also be in on the new trend of Highschool Girl x At Least Somewhat Older Male romantic pairings.

So actually, this isn't the story at all. Without getting into spoiler, the broad story is Miharu disappeared years before the start of the story and was childhood friends with the main character. Also, while it is another reincarnated japanese person, he isn't just himself over there. He is inhabiting the body of an already living thinking person and ceases to be himself but a mixture of who he was in japan and this young boy on a quest for revenge. I can't say how well the anime will adapt this, but there's a lot more intrigue to this story than first glance or a synopsis might tell you.

^Edit, well, it might not be much of spoilers as I thought after re-checking the first volume.

Also, for age gap worries, spoiler[while Miharu disappeared/was summoned years earlier before Rio, she only arrives later, so they're pretty much the same age when they meet again...]
