If it involves experienced studios around the world, then I'm all for it.

You'd think with all of Nintendo's money and skill at IP management, they could have gotten a better studio than the friggin' Minions guys.

A lot of times it's not about getting the fastest workers, the most awards, but the studio that fits their needs. Nintendo and Dreamworks would likely be butting heads every five seconds, to use an example.

What's the next logical step? Star Fox? Zelda? Donkey Kong?

It's not a matter of quality, it's a matter of Illumination being owned by Universal Studios and Nintendo partnering with Universal to make Super Nintendo World.

I don’t really understand the hatred people have for Illumination to be honest. Their movies sell well with kids and seem to score decently well in film reviews and the original Despicable Me movie I thought was a genuinely good movie. It’s clear Miyamoto is heavily involved and Illumination has pretty decently good animators. And I think gamers tend to forget Mario is a franchise geared towards children which Illumination is successful at marketing towards. I assume Nintendo here means that they plan to make more animated film franchises with Hollywood studios as Nintendo does have a long history of both American animated TV shows and anime properties of their games for them to say they’re going to invest more in animation.

Or Dreamworks, or Sony Pictures Animation, or Cartoon Saloon, or Laika...and those are just if you limit yourself to major western studios. There's plenty of options that have better track records than Illumination.

Limiting it to western studios, there really aren't any viable choices that are obviously better than Illumination. Disney or Pixar would obviously be the best, but there's no chance they'd be interested outside of a "Disney buys Nintendo" scenario. Dreamworks might be better than Illumination, but it's not like their track record is so flawless that we wouldn't be hearing the exact same complaints. Other than those three, every other major US studio generally makes much less money and has about the same critical reception compared to Illumination. As for smaller studios (Laika, Cartoon Saloon, etc.), the ones with a history of making good films probably wouldn't be interested in abandoning their own style in favor of working for a much bigger company.

I do wonder what are the biggest animation movie studios out there currently that Nintendo could have worked with other than Illumination.
Nothing against Illumination here, just wondering.

Cause I’ve never understood the hate for Illumination or those little one eyed Hostess Twinkies.

Do people really think Sony is going to make animated movies for their rival company?

It'd be nice to see their IP used in some new anime or western animation.
Zelda by Genndy Tartakovski would work well I think considering Samurai Jack was quite a quiet protagonist.
You could do plenty with Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, Star Fox, Metroid or even Advance Wars.

As mediocre as the Minions movies or the Illumination Grinch movie are, they still sold gangbusters and unfortunately that's the bottom line in this scenario. We can count on Nintendo watching those guys like hawks (they do not want another Bob Hoskins movie on their hands), so it's going to be entirely according to their internal series bible.

I'm fully prepared for the Mario movie to not be as good as the Sonic movie. But worst case scenario, it'll just be forgettable.

Games to NOT adapt: Zelda, Metroid, Fire Emblem (we all remember the middling OVA). Instead, try Kid Icarus or Splatoon.
