To me, the best thing about this show is one the review neglected to mention: the great opening theme, "Needle Knot" by The Pinballs. I don't think IWGP is a bad show, but I wish it were half as good as its OP.

I tried to like this show but I remember feeling like it’s handling of the politics of the war of drugs was very shaky and not believably. Granted I’m not an expert on the subject but they made it seem like the Japanese police was too powerless to shut down an illegal drug trade or something even though the Japanese government in real life is like super strict on drugs. This combined with the Gary Stu MC just made the series a harder sale for me.

I liked the anime for what it was, but the J-drama was far superior. Watching the 2003 special after completing the anime really drove this fact home.

Anime never answered the question why Makoto wasnt a G-Boy. I was waiting.

otherwise the stories with the mothets, both episodes, the chinese immigrants, the exploitive labor practices, and the civil war were memorable. Civil war though could have worked better if the show was double the length and it came at the end. didn't think we got to know Makoto x Isogai as well as we wanted or needed to make that plot truly impactful.

I remember wondering (without actually reading IWGP) if Durarara was inspired by it at the time. It does also have a guy who's an "information broker" without actually explaining what that even is.

I'm like 90% sure one of the authors notes in the early Durarara volumes mentioned IWGP as inspiration.

<3 Kudo Kankuro.
Pretty sure the IWGP show was one of his very first writing credits.

I believe in at least one of the Durarara books, the characters state that they're fans of the j-drama and it was a partial inspiration to Masaomi starting up a color gang in the first place.

Durarara's my favorite anime, so I was actually really excited to check this show out when it came out. I went through like half of it though before I figured my time would've probably been better spent watching the j-drama instead. For a show about gangs, I couldn't believe how toothless it was.
