I've enjoyed this so far. I like the justification for the human forms of the monsters being due to the affects of the contract being so lopsided. I wonder if that's where those blue lizard people (and some other monsters) came from. Perhaps they were originally humans who contracted with Shen and became monstrous...
The killer ring joke was pretty good too Laughing

First off, the OP is amazing. One of my favourites this year.

I'm honestly really surprised they turned this into a comedy. Don't get me wrong, it works far better than I initially thought, but I remember the web novel being darker overall with the occasional humourous moment thrown in. That could be down to the quality of the fan translation of course, but I never expected the anime to be turned into a comedy. Can anybody clarify if my memory is wrong?

Fortunately it works, and the slapdash nature of it helps to speed through some parts and adapt more of the source material than they probably would otherwise. It helps that the characters introduced so far - especially Tomoe - are just so gosh-darn likeable. (For those confused about her double name, Shen is her dragon name known to the world and Tomoe is the name given to her by Makoto as her master).

Yea your remembering wrong the series is mostly a comedy at the start and mixing in darker stuff as it goes on.

Oh, great, another Slime Time, then. Maybe I should bail now.

It remains a funny and exceedingly likable spoof of the isekai trend, albeit a loving one, and it has just as much fun indulging in some of the genre tropes as it does in lampooning them.

If it still feels like a fresh parody even though the WN started in January 2012, that has... some kind of implications for how much the genre's developed since then. Or failed to.

I dunno, maybe a more recent title would have a different feel from the stuff that's been animated. What's the most popular story on Narou over the past year? *checks* "The World's Fastest Level Up"... well, looks like technically it's not isekai, I guess.

It's a pretty decent series yeah but it is very comparable to That Time I Reincarnated to a Slime. Early hook with decent enough MC with some personality, a really fun dragon partner with good chemistry (Veldora and Tomoe), building community for demi-humans, with some hints to a larger geopolitical conflict looming over the horizon.

Unfortunately it's also similar to the divisive Slime's shift to more edgy, darker tone (and it was already a bit more edgy Slime from the start), so I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who's more put off by Slime's development

I read some of the manga for this and found it a lot of fun until they started focusing on spoiler[the other isekaied kids], at which point I dropped it out of boredom, confusion and distaste. It's too bad, I'm sure it gets better once it starts focusing on spoiler[Makoto] again. I doubt this adaptation will get that far though, so it should be a fun ride for what it is.

Interesting that you say it is edgier than slime. Where I thought it was taking itself far less seriously than slime. Mokoto basically stumbles into hosting the orcs in this convient alternate realm of his imagination. His powers are far more magical (and that is saying something given how airy slime is with its power scaling), and he seems far less interested in looking after other people rather than just going on a adventure and being lampooned constantly with others seeking his powers.

I like the airiness of the whole thing because if it took itself too seriously than the paper thin plot writing would be boring. It has its charms in its likeable protagonist and shen (I can never remember her human name).

The main odd thing I find is the sheer willingness of these monster girls to enslave themselves to a master rather than walk with him as an equal. I suppose that is the proclivities of the genre though. You need the OP to take away any threat of real life drama being applied to their actions.

Well, the difference is that anyone following Tsukimichi from the start will be properly seeded for the darker shifts, and it also spoiler[handles the fallout with a lot more grace than Slime literally ignoring the elephant in the room.]

Ah, I am all in with turning evil villains into human paste or living hamburger in the case of that other series. Especially, evil villains pretending to be Heroes. Nothing sweeter than karmic justice. I do like comedic fights too. Going to give this show a shot now.

Exactly my reaction. After the initial reviews, I wanted to like this, but after ~30 minutes of viewing time, I just can't motivate myself to watch another minute of it; Slime is already a kind of if-I'm-really-bored-maybe-I'll-catch-up-with-it title, for me -- definitely don't need a copy of it in my viewing, unless there were reason to expect it to be a lot more competent in some of the writing fundamentals Slime struggles with (but I can't see why I'd expect that, here, based on the first few episodes).

The reviews had me hoping I'd find the protagonist and his harem charming, and the jokes funny, but I think only the Goddess hating him because she thinks he's ugly, and the God-not-ess promising to destroy his anime porn, even got a chuckle out of me. The main cast mostly felt like the same old tropes; not enough unique substance to keep my attention. Ah well.

So far as the characters go, the main trio that we get introduced to are the adventurers that Makoto and Co. meet on their way to the village of Tsige: Louisa the elven “Bless Gunner", Hazal the “Alchemy Meister”, and the dwarf Ranina, who is a super buff “Priest Knight".

I was incredibly confused by their presence. Fortunately, AlphaManga just released the chapter that ended the previous episode, which also explains why they are here. They were also kidnapped by the level 444 guy and freed by Tomoe and Mio (I think we saw them in the background in the previous episode), and as a result were one of the remaining people left in the destroyed village. Makoto altered their memories of the destruction and offered to take them with him to Tsige. That's also why all of them, including Rin and Toa, part ways after they get there.

Why they didn't bother to quickly explain these simple to explain things in the anime, I do not know. It just made things confusing. This adaptation has been skipping over small details here and there (one from this episode that I would consider nice to have but not necessary to show is Makoto planned to make an excuse to send Tomoe off so she and Mio won't fight and destroy the next village), but I think this is the first time that skipping something was detrimental.

I got all of that information from the anime, without reading the manga. I don't think it was skipped.

@reviewer He picks up the quest halfway through this episode when he notices that any rank can do the quest and he already has the materials. What I dont understand is why he is getting a dressing down for delivering the goods requested at the end of the episode.

My guess is he's getting dressed down because he introduced himself as a merchant, but doesn't know how to act like a merchant.

(note: the official English manga is now behind the anime, so I can't read ahead even if I wanted to)
