I thought that location looked familiar, and lo and behold, I was right!

am I the only one who is genuinely distressed by anime becoming a fairly mainstream form of media? Enough to warrant things like this outside Japan?

I even heard an Olympian yesterday say how anime was his inspiration on public television and kind of reeled.

I don't understand why this would be a bad thing, and it's also not a new thing. Anime hasn't really been niche for at least a decade now, probably even longer depending on how you define "popular."

it's not bad it just scares the shit out of me because it reminds me of my old age. Iremember when you used to watch anime on yellow subs or on youtube freely. At that time, no one outside those IRC cult rooms knew what anime was.

What are you talking about? I know plenty of people like me who started watching/collecting anime on VHS before there was any significant discussion online, youtube or IRC cult rooms (except usenet groups like rec.arts.anime.isc), and they're doing fine. And like Top Gun said, this is not a new thing. Anime has become "mainstream" since at least a decade to two ago.

Anime's been airing on US broadcast tv since the 60s (Astro Boy, Speed Racer, Gigantor, etc.). People just didn't know it was anime. Smile

I think the murals are cool, but I wish one of those videos would show the very beginning, when they're drawing the artwork on the building, instead of just the painting inside the lines part.

I'm another old person who started back in the VHS days, and yeah, I'm doing fine as well. I love it, actually, because it means we get way more niche stuff than back in the day, since it's more likely to sell well enough. We're living through a golden age of English-localized manga and anime, and I will happily continue to enjoy it.

If anime becomes more mainstream (again) to the point it goes back to airing in afternoon and early evening slots instead of early morning & dead of night slots and hopefully with no bullshit edits or unnecessary localization how is that a bad thing?

I can now say anime is mainstream in my Mexico because I saw this tweet the other day:

https://twitter.com/crunchyroll_la/status/1420413743163269127

Seeing a 3x2 promotion of crunchyroll prepaid cards in a well known supermarket promotion "julio regalado" that goes back decades blows my mind.

Next stop would be to have anime characters on cereal boxes, but sadly this #$%& goverment we have atm has made that kind of publicity illegal.

No, I 100% agree with you in what you’re getting at, this occurrence is freaky. Even bordering onto unsettling. Since anime was such an underground phenomena where only small groups at a time would rally praise on niche websites or places in person, it is a little disturbing. In no way would I still classify anime as mainstream—at least outside of America as I’m aware. As not a single person I’ve met in years has mentioned that term offline, maybe the casual cool teacher, but not commonly, no.
