Remember back in the day Toys R Us would have Pokemon TCG events and also you could get Pokemon Legendaries from the kiosks or whatever.
Going to be surreal going into something upscale like Macy's to do the same. |

I suppose there is some sense in this plan. From what I recall, having more space/locations than it could afford to maintain was one of several problems for them. More or less just being a brand for a department in an existing store would address that.

I thought Macy's also went bankrupt. At least the ones by me all shut down.

Forgetting the financial issues Macy's itself has, I don't see how this is a great idea. At least not in terms of WHO they have partnered with. I get the idea of having smaller "stores" (really just the toy section) within a larger department store. It would obviously be much cheaper then owning hundreds of your own brick and mortar stores. Why Macy's? They are a bit too upscale and when I think of "let's go get some toys!" I do not think of Macy's. They would've been much better off partnering with say Target or Walmart if it was feasible.

Yeah, Target and Walmart already have huge toy sections and don't have any need for outside branding. Macy's represents untapped retail space for them.

My thought was some sort of partnership with them for lines of exclusive toys. Something like that. Yea they have toy sections already, but the Toys R US name would be recognizable and bring brand recognition. "They have toys, we have Toys R Us toys". Besides, just because they're competition now doesn't mean they can't strike a deal. Hello Funi and CR. Yes I know, very different situation being bought and owned by the same parent company, but the point remains deals can be made.
I just don't see this partnership/deal they have with Macy's as being very fruitful in the end. Macy's is not exactly a place you go to for toys, and I would bet money what they wind up carrying will also be overpriced (like with much of what Macy's carries). |

Nice to see TRU back in some way. I can see why it makes sense though. A lot of parents have their kids with them when they're shopping at Macy's, so it could definitely be a decent source of revenue

Well,I'm grateful to Macy's for helping Toys 'R Us return from the dead. Yeah,I admit that the company may be kinda low brow for a something like Macy's,but I don't have a problem with it. If something like this is beneficial for both companies,then I say go for it. What's the harm? It may be helpful to them in the long run and may be good for their bottom line. I think it's a good idea and they should go with it.

Looking at the selection of toys on Macy's website, it looks to be the same line of toys they've sold more or less since last year. Maybe I'll expect a couple of new toys this year. Like I remember they did carry a Sega Genesis Mini for the holidays and that cheap Data East handheld. So tempered expectations.

They’re slowly closing less profitable locations as their leases come up. This actually predates even the COVID pandemic. The long term plans is to only have around 400 of their best performing full size department stores, and focus on opening up more stand-alone backstage locations and their other small format stores. I’ll give them both props for at least trying something new. This allows Toys R Us to expand their operations with less risk than building their own stores. It also allows Macy’s to re-enter a sector they left a long time ago, as well as make use of the excess space they have in a lot of their stores. It may also pull some curious customers into them. I don’t know if will last long term, but considering how many companies have failed trying to stick the same dying business model, at least they are doing something a little different. |

I guess re-branding an existing department store's toy section to Toys R' Us is better than nothing for Americans but it's a pity that the pandemic scuttled the original plans to open standalone Toys R' Us stores in a handful of huge regional destination-type malls.
Of course, Toys R' Us never closed in the first place up here in Canada so I'm a little smug that I can still go to my local old-school big box Toys R' Us store every couple of weeks to look for premium Hot Wheels and Greenlight cars. |
