For anyone wondering, the reason the song isn't on there is because the license to use it is EXTREMELY expensive, far more than GKids can reasonably afford. I heard the song costs as much as a house, and those costs, times 26 episodes? Far too exorbitant for any company to afford. Please don't bash anyone working on this for not including it, as I'm sure they wanted to do right by this show.

Re-post From Ad Thread:

I still have the Platinum Edition DVDs from ADV, and aside from the Fly Me To The Moon ED, sounds like these new sets will contain all the extras from those so I guess they will be pretty much obsolete.

I was late to the final Eva movie viewing party, but I gotta say as someone who went from a mega-to-lapsed fan over the years, I loved Thrice Upon A Time and the ending.

Also, I'm hard-pressed to believe it was the original plan, but the way Mari Makinami's character was ultimately handled was absolutely brilliant.

I'm guessing this is also the result of anime's worldwide popularity. It's certainly not the niche oddity that it used to be. But the problem is that now, we can't get Fly Me To The Moon ED's or proper JoJo's Stand names because of the associated expenses. This was not an issue 15+ years ago.

Similarly, GKids would more than likely love to include the old ADV dub & sub translation for the standard release, but Khara is the reason why it's restricted to only the limited-release options. The entire point of the "official" Netflix dub was for Khara & Hideaki Anno to have the translation that they felt met to their approval, so that's why that gets priority & is available in the standard release, but not the ADV-produced stuff.

You know, I really should have guessed that the Ultimate Edition box, with art from the OG laserdiscs, would be the size of a laserdisc but for some reason those dimensions had me going holy cow.

I guess I'll stick with my DVDs.

How hard is it for companies that redub stuff to release standard releases of things that included the original dub instead of all this extra stuff? I get there's an audience for physical goodies but I gotta wonder how big is it compared to people who'd actually like just the shows themselves.

I've got zero interest in any of that extra stuff outside of the shows itself. It's why I never bought the Seed re-release by Rightstuf. Just give me the shows and not any of this extra stuff.

Which is a shame because the Netflix dub has a ton of grammatical issues. It may work in JP but not everything translates 1:1. Children vs Child was a pretty big mistake and the fact that got through to the final release is a little disappointing.

Anyone have any idea how much the license on the old dub must cost? I'm not interested in that and while the other stuff is nice, it's like a $130 difference. Just found myself curious since it must cost something big if they are not including it on that common release.

I thought about getting the CE for a moment, but the box art is underwhelming, and EoE on BD is what I most need. The better looking, standard edition should suffice.

Would love to have someone explain to me just what in that "collector's" edition justifies charging almost 3 times as much. A whopping 40 pages of book? 8 whole art cards? A few extra disks? I'm all ears!

I'll honestly be more inclined to buy something if it includes extras. They don't affect the show itself and it increases the value of actually buying a show/movie physically vs just streaming it. I was really disappointed with the Eleven Arts release of Liz and the Blue Bird when it didn't include anything, not even trailers.

So the Children vs Child is because that's what Gainax/Khara wanted. ADV pushed back during the original release and used Child instead of Children that was requested from Gainax.

After a brief chat with my husband (who also loves the show) this morning, we preordered the Collector's Edition from Right Stuf.

We still have ADV's Platinum Collection set, but were missing official copies of the two movies. The CE including the ADV dub/sub was the main bonus that drew me in. I already have at least ten Eva art and/or analysis books, so the art cards and book are just nice extras. Some of the video extras sound pretty interesting, though.

"Fly Me to the Moon" will be greatly missed, but one can hardly blame GKids, Khara, etc. for not shelling out for exorbitant licensing fees. However, I will admit its absence was what soured me on the Ultimate Edition (the price being a close second); after all, it could hardly be called "ultimate" without that song.

Thanks to streaming, the home video market has contracted significantly making physical media a collector's / enthusiast's market, and all those extras add considerable value to a release. These days if you want "just the show," you either buy digital or hope it stays on your preferred streaming platform.

Names were changed in the PS1/DC game and the Golden Wind game didn't even make it to the US because of the names. Both were 15+ years ago.

^Yeah and in Golden Wind's case, there were attempts at it. The GioGio nickname was originally meant to be used in the European version before it got cancelled.

I had to go back and check my memory, because I didn't recall the JoJo OVA's from 93-94 and 00-02 having name changes. But, some quick research shows that they got around the names mostly through spelling changes IE Iggi instead of Iggy. However, they couldn't get away with Vanilla Ice so it was changed to "Iced." Thank you for correcting me on that.

That said, the Platinum Edition of Eva came out in 04-05, and as far as I'm aware ADV was never hit up by the Sinatra Estate for Fly Me To The Moon royalties.
