Is it good fortune that I chose to save The Ninth Jedi for last simply because I heard it was a take on the distant future of Star Wars, while also working my way backwards after the third episode? Because hell, I don't think I've dodged a bullet like this in a while.

The only one I’ve watched so far is “The Village Bride”, because I like Kinema Citrus. And after all the talk in the article about Kurosawa tributes, I gotta say this about TVB:

You’ve got a village that has fallen under the control of a crime boss and his gang of thugs, who ruthlessly exploit the innocent people. Along comes a mysterious traveler, who slowly reveals themself to be a master sword-weilder with a mysterious past, and in a climactic battle they take down the thugs and the boss and liberate the people.

Y’all, this is every Zatoichi movie ever made.

I know we should be talking about Star Wars: Visions but…

I've got this nice big pile of Kamen Rider to sift through and it comes without some dude eating pizza rolls talking about how Kamen Rider Wizard was the biggest disappointment since his son.

This was hilarious.

Glad I wasn't the only one who thought of Kaiba with that one short. Although, after that series, it's hard to watch that art style and not expect some good ol' Seussical mindscrew horror; I'd love to see a TWiA on it!

I'm really hoping the next stage in endless pop culture recycling is a trend of anthology series; I'm a little disappointed this doesn't look like it'll kick that trend off. Maybe we'll get a more interesting second season...

I think there are a few things going for TOB1 that might make it a little more memorable and noteworthy in Japanese than English.

One is that they got Nozawa Masako for the lead, and the other is that the official Japanese dub voice for Harrison Ford (from as far back as A New Hope) plays his master.

Not all of the seiyuu choices stood out for me but I figured if they were willing to shell out for Nozawa, they wouldn't skimp on her counterpart. Quick google later and there it is.

That, plus the clear astroboy inspiration, makes TOB1 kind of historical imo.

Ninth Jedi was the only entry of the lot I'd consider worthy of a high quality OVA-level anthology but I'm probably just tired of Trigger gonna Trigger and weird pointless CG action. Both are so pedestrian now they leave me to do the one thing you really don't want to be left doing with Star Wars: notice all the little details. Like having a scabbard for a lightsaber. You wot?

And YET one of the sabers in T9thJ had a friggin tsuba. Equally silly, but because I was engrossed and on board, it was cool-silly, not distracting-silly.

Also liked Rhapsody just for the liveliness.

There was disturbingly little animation at times for an anime anthology -- I love Kinema Citrus but after their struggle to get through Starlight and some of the strain in Shield Hero I wouldn't consider them top tier. They sure are lucky to have Penkin though.

As for the dubtitles: ugh. The worst was in Bride: Asu and Haru had a call and response in Japanese: I am the sky. I am the forest. I am the river. Then I am the wind. I am the clouds. And I forget the last one. But in English they clearly just repeat the first one. That was jarring. Or during The Twins, we had [screaming] for a fairly clear "Orokana" from Shiraishi Ryoko's Am. As I said: ugh. Dubtitles are terrible and lazy. Hurts all the more because a friend of mine worked on these translations and I know he agrees with me.

Okay, so yeah, regarding the actual JP dialogue, most of the tacky SW lines were in there, although I find 'I have a bad feeling about this' somehow less wince-inducing in Japanese, probably because it's used a lot elsewhere but translated a little differently because, well, it's not always THAT line. Do or do not was in there. I'm just glad I switched to the jp after barely getting through The Duel, and I did it for one pretty interesting reason: the Japanese cast was credited before the English.

That is pretty surprising if you consider the target audience, the IP and the fact that they used dubtitles...

Anyway, nowhere near as impressive as Animatrix (and I say that as no lover of that series) and missing many of the truly top tier studios, but still, nice to see a little cultural exchange, even if at times it felt almost like a jab at how much Lucas plundered in the first place. How could The Duel feel so derivative (the GF glanced over and was like 'dude looks like a ripoff Manji' and snorted in derision; I do love her so) and yet made with authenticity? Crazy.

I actually thought The Twins was one of the weakest shorts. It goes so, so hard on the exposition. I feel like almost all the expository dialogue could have been cut completely and the story still would have made perfect sense. We don't need to know the origin of the two siblings, we don't need to know all this stuff about the tech involved.

I kept waiting for the part where the fun Trigger animation kicked in, but I was disappointed. There wasn't really any fun Trigger sakuga to be found. Even the big climactic shot at the end was just a still image. It didn't help that there's another short about divided siblings that has much more compelling characters and story. The only thing I really liked about this short was the palette.

I'm just going to preface this first by saying I grew up with the Star Wars Original Trilogy but I really fell off after the Prequel Trilogy and now I've slowwwwwly gotten back into it. I've only seen Force Awakens, Rogue One, Mandalorian, and now Visions.

Had a hard time getting through your banter on this one at first. Came off really pretentious. I guess because I really liked The Duel and I was just confused and baffled at that weird tangent you guys went on about how the Wachowskis understand anime better and that the Animatrix shows that. I think Visions shows off the wide variety of the Anime medium far better than Animatrix does.

Other than that, I pretty much agree with everything you said. Akakiri is the lowest for me and Ninth Jedi and Lop&Ocho are the ones who really deserve continuation.
