Betting the +9k supporter Ghibli series of vignettes on the site will probably get to the milestone and get a verdict much sooner. If it's approved, that really opens the gate for projects like this. I imagine LEGO would be eager for the license, given how much they're marketing towards an adult audience as of late.

Whether or this project is approved will depend not only on Lego, but Studio Ghibli as well. Even if Lego desperately wants to give this idea a green light, they can’t do a thing if Studio Ghibli says no. Hopefully the Japanese studio finds the idea charming enough to allow for it, but we’ll see.

Now whether or not this is fair use from a practical but not legal standpoint is debatable. Also, even if the Japanese rights holders and the estate of Diana Wynne Jones don't approve of this idea, I think it would be foolish for LEGO to not attempt to get a license for this idea. That is, provided that enough support is given (the 10k).

I’m so in love with this!!! And SO impressed!
I haven’t played with LEGOs since my nephews grew up, but I would buy this in a heartbeat. It’s one of my favorite Ghibli movies—and I loved the book, too (even though they’re completely different). I made a LEGO IDEAS account just so I could vote for—sorry, “support”— it.
