A bit of room of the top floor is put aside for gashapon (capsule toy) machines and the café area, although it's not really a café in the typical sense of the word: There are no chairs, and the beverages are self-serve from the drink bar.

How common are self-serve cafés in Japan?

Based from my multiple trips to Japan, the self-serve is somewhat common to a few family restaurants, but not a coffee shop. Based on the picture, the coffee machines are like those machines where it can just make your preferred coffee (e.g. latte or cappuccino) by just a click of a button.

And the fact there are also no chairs, ahh -- it isn't typical indeed. Very Happy

Perhaps the lack of seating is a COVID related thing.

I have to agree about the UFO machines, many of the arcade building I have been into, are mainly UFO and/or boutique photo boothes. Though one did have an amazing music related arcade section. Despite that, Japan still beats the U.S. on actual arcade games for uniqueness and popularity.

Nothing beats Japan's Madoka Magica slot machines and pachinko machines. Only wish that Las Vegas and Atlantic City would pick up that anime love for their slot machines, cause they would have another customer for life.

Hm, it is possible but I remember going inside the SEGA Arcades. Like a department store, their arcades have its own section. The lowest floor would usually compromise of crane games. The upper floors would be fighting games, dance games (DDR or DanceManiax), music games (GuitarMania or Drummania), and etc. So the scenario is that they squish all of the similar machines as much as possible (of course in an orderly manner) in a single floor, sometimes two floors.

So if I think about the absence of the chairs, it is understandable. The venue is already cramped as it is. Very Happy

The big thing if you've never been there is a lot of arcades and anime/manga focused shops have floors or small alcoves with drink areas to simply just to sit down. In Tokyo in particular it can be difficult sometimes just to find a place to get away for a bit unless you go into some sort of mainstream fast food or coffee shop, where a lot of people are likely going to be regardless. Vending machines with some seating can pull a good deal of money at these type places.

One of my personal favorites is a small 'coffee floor' in a place called Liberty in Akihabara. Liberty is a favorite re-seller chain of mine that primarily re-sells figma, doujinshi, and the like. Liberty 5 - the stores are numbered in Akiba if there are more than one - have a small lounge. There are like four convenience stores around their 5 building, but key again is that you can't sit down in any of them or just rest off the streets. Places like this are nice to just be able to duck into and get away from the crowds.
