As a fine art grad, I would say that Blue Period has captured the tip of the iceberg on how it is to be in an art school. It is true that the art school community is a bunch of weirdos with a lot of heart but when it comes to art, everyone do as much as they can to put integrity into their artworks.
When someone does enter the art school, art doesn't become just a hobby anymore, it becomes something more. It is true, that we put most of our childishness views with art and see it as more than that -- like it is a way of life. It is a demanding course/work/'hobby' to take. Artists do get physically, emotionally, and sometimes even spiritually, into it to the point that sometimes there is also an internal conflict while in the artmaking process. Finally, I will agree on the part where there is such a thing as a genius... however a genius is someone who happened to have honed his/her/their craftsmanship in an early age -- someone who has seen art as a way of life. Blue Period is a unique anime that captures on how a student becomes an artist in his own way. It is a reflection of the real world's perspective of young aspiring artists and their choice of ambition. |

Never does really answer that question, never even really addresses it for that matter. That being said, I have a friend who discovered capital A Art late in life who then went to art school (and is currently working on her Masters)... and on Facebook she said a lot of things about the process that the anime echoes. (Both from Yatora's POV, and also some of the behaviors of the side characters.) So, from a strictly third party perspective I'd say it rings pretty true. Suffering physically for your art? As a photographer, yah, I get that. At least all my gear fits into a dedicated backpack! On the other hand, you guys don't have to unpack and deploy your art or instruments on a moment's notice under all manner of conditions. I owe whoever developed the photographer's sling bag an undying debt of gratitude! |

If Yaguchi has a type, then I think that type is his mother. While Mori has a bit of mom vibe going on, Yotasuke is the spitting image of Yaguchi's mother. Hell, he looks more like her than Yaguchi does.
 
It's funny - the series has been very enjoyable, but it took this article to somehow dredge up the trauma of a photography class I once took years ago. I've barely picked up a camera since. |
