I watched the first episode earlier today and the dub really disappointed me. They didn't even bother doing accents for the characters, which I thought would be a given. I do like that they the cast a non binary trans man as Richard, but the dub itself just feels so generic and workmanlike.

This combined with the lackluster art and animation has really killed my enthusiasm for the anime, I'll most likely just read the manga instead.

I haven't got to watch the dub yet but fake accents in dubs always kind of make me cringe so I'm glad if they didn't do that with this show.

Accent use is always an interesting topic in dubs. I don't mind the lack of accents in this case considering you don't go into a non-UK stage production of a Shakespeare play expecting full-on accents from everyone either. It's still heightened and theatrical but the show is not trying to portray a more realistic picture of a certain time period in England. A good comparison on the opposite end would be a show like Moriarty, where I think the use of accents does better establish the setting, place, and giving some diversity among the cast with different types of accents. With a show like this, that extra flavor is already served by the script, 15th-century colloquialisms, and even more accurate references to works like Henry VI. If anything, the more obtuse style of writing and speaking in Rose King would probably be further hindered by also going for accents and can further alienate an audience.

Even when you look at mid-2000s shows where accent use (whether good or bad) seemed much more prominent (Baccano, Black Butler, Hetalia, etc...) Romeo x Juliet did not use accents but rather just adopted a more theatrical way of speaking/copious use of iambic pentameter.

That being said, I have noticed that these types of shows can also take some time for the actors to settle into giving more natural performances since it is so different. Although with Shawn Gann at the helm (who has a ton of experience with Shakespeare productions in the Dallas theater scene), I think pieces will fall into place much faster than with a lot of other historically-set series. I also know I have a lot of faith in Ciaran as the lead, esp after hearing him in smaller roles like Louis in Case Study of Vanitas.

The lead actor is certainly a miss here for me just lacks any real presence in their voice. The rest of cast is competent to a degree but I never had much interest in Shawn Gann's acting doubt that will change much with this show or dub.

Interesting cast. I was wondering if they'd go the Moriarty route with accents, but sounds like they didn't.
