So I watched the first episode of season one back when it first premiered, thought, oh sure this is fine, maybe I'll get back to it later and later turned out to be like, two weeks or so ago when the clip of Carl getting her neck snapped by elf girl Johnny 2x 4 was making the rounds. It was the perfect sample of the show's humor and having binged all of season 1 and the episodes of season 2 that were available at the time it was a really fun and breezy time.

Konosuba but less mean spirited is how I would best describe the show, though unlike Konosuba, where it's entire plot is driven by idiocy, the plot of Priconne feels more like an obligation than anything. I'll admit I was interested in the idea that something was utterly wrong with the world, perhaps because I don't play a lot of these sorts of moblie games or watch many isekai, but once it was revealed that it was one and that this might all have been a virtual world I had a moment where I went "Oh wow, so this wasn't the real world after all... hey wait but that just makes this an isekai....oh..."

In a different show, such a reveal probably would have really made the show get on my bad side, and while there are some potential implications I may not like (Are Pecorine, Carl and co. even "real" or are they just program virtual people?) the fact that this show is, most of the time a gleefully stupid comedy makes it hard to be too mad at it. This show has spent far too much time giving me well animated goofy hi jinks for me to even be mad if the show were to suddenly switch genre's from here on out, and given that the show really doesn't even have the time to humor such ideas in any meaningful way, it's a lot easier to assume that we're just going to go back to telling jokes until like the last two episodes or something. Besides not all of it's tone shifts are bad, as I liked the premiere of S2 and the Forest episode, so I have the confidence that the rest of the season will more or less be good fun as well.

So apparently like everyone, I liked the the start of the first season but grew incredibly bored by the mid point. The show insistence of having to introduce every gacha character had all the fun of watching a manager go trough a checklist. Maybe I'll pick up S2 at some point (did they finally run out of gacha character?).

After watching and enjoying S1 I dug a bit deeper and was honestly really pissed off it was a secret Isekai. Not because of an inherent hate for isekai (Though I won't deny I have that to some extent) but because of the nature of the isekai it means A LOT of the things in the series... kind of don't actually matter at all. spoiler[Pecorine's Parents for example are just AI]

But my attitude has softened quite a bit since then. There are still satisfying arcs and character moments in the anime and in the game, and I ended up playing the game even. I just tend to tune out the main story in it's entirety with the infodumps and nonsensical matryoshka of nested loops and focus on the character interaction and side stories. And that's been pretty satisfying tbh.

IMO the anime does a MUCH better job of raising tension and telling a compelling narrative with Peco/Kaiser by virtue of basically cutting all the fat from the game.

For what it's worth, spoiler[Eustiana von Astraea presumably has actual flesh-and-blood parents somewhere.

The number of meaningful characters that are well and truly long-term hosed by the premise isn't zero, but it's really low.]
