I'm so glad this series is finally coming out in English (seven years later, just like Shun) so I now have an easy recommendation for a BL series that pretty much does no wrong, by combining the almighty powers of "research" and "empathy."
Is "gentle deconstruction" a thing? It's rare to get this kind of follow up to a stand-alone volume, but I really enjoy how it softly pulls apart the conveniences and contrivances of the earlier work. Mio's functional limitations as a Manic Pixie Dream Boy start becoming really obvious, and Shun, for all his insecurities, does manage to barely pass for a functioning adult. And no, two gay virgins are not going to magically have great sex, because anal is complicated. (Just wear the frigging condom, Mio.) Even then, Kanna Kii isn't cynical about it, just mixing in little doses of reality to show how "happily ever after" has to be earned one day at a time. However...
(Translation-quality question: I'm curious how Seven Seas handled spoiler[Shun's gay hookup in this volume. American gay slang would be the ideal adaptation, I think].) |

I wish so much that I had written this line. It's a perfect statement about the series. Did you read Restart After Growing Hungry, the sequel to Restart After Going Home? I thought it also did a very good job on the same fronts, and it has the added bonus of spoiler[parents fully supporting the men getting married, or what passes for it legal-wise in Japan]. I'd love a larger trim size for this series to better get a handle on the art. |

Ugh, I liked Stranger by the Shore, but I can't bring myself to read more of the sequel manga, knowing what it eventually becomes and all the problems that start to pop up after this.

I'm definitely a prickly sort, but there's nothing that really jumps out at me as a potential problem. I know it becomes the Fumi and Sakurako show for a bit, but that makes perfect sense if you consider the "Spring-breeze Stranger" reffered to by the title probably isn't Mio this time around, it's Fumi. (Just wild speculation but, spoiler[he's just the right age to be Sakurako's son, and the list of possible fathers around that time period is really just the one name]. Nothing really conclusive, but it would explain most of the series.)

I don't think the author intended on having more story than just the "first" volume. But it kind of blew up and made some money, so likely the editorial mandate stepped in and asked the author to continue the story. A lot of times money speak louder than the narrative. The story is definitely recommendable even with things I take personal issues with. |
