The new seasons they already produced were completely forgettable. The original show told a complete story and didn't need sequels. The original stuff Toonami has produced in general has been pretty lackluster (Space Dandy being the best of the bunch).

Imagine if we lived in the timeline where Anno got the rights to FLCL as he was promised, and Tsurumaki actually got to direct a sequel instead of being a "production manager".

More FLCL? This comes off a bit desperate since there wasn't much need for the last two sequels, and people seemed to move on right away. And I'm sure they're going for something but the use of CGI for one of them doesn't inspire much confidence.

demarco hyped this up earlier by telling toonami fans to keep their eyes peeled for an announcement and after it was announced...well

He was quick to disagree with someone who saw this as unoriginal and lame

honestly this just seems like a case of adultswim wanting to make fooly cooly into a franchise because they think it's the best anime ever

why?...i have no idea

Holy crap what the hell are you even thinking with the idea of making a 4th and 5th FLCL series.

Feels like Adult Swim is running FLCL into the ground. Now it's CGI?

The horror anime at least looks interesting.

as i previously stated adultswim thinks it's the best anime ever and jason demarco agrees

i have no idea why but they keep pushing for it to be like the rick and morty of anime...some major mainstream thing adultswim can utilize

You know, a lot of people give Netflix crap for their original slate for a variety of reasons, some deserved without a doubt, some not so much. But after the last batch of FLCL sequels were considered subpar, this is their big answer to Bastard!! and possibly Chainsaw Man? (That last one is a rumor, but still).

Toonami doesn't have a huge budget, which makes the shows they do get for the originals all the more judged harshly. So why make more of the thing that did mediocre in every metric from ratings to critical response? The original FLCL was a great show. But no one was knocking down the door for more (mostly because the original was a complete story).

I can barely remember the previous FLCL sequels. And yet I always have the original vividly in my mind. They’d better step it up with the writing because if it’s just more bland garbage, it’s not going to impress anyone.

I liked Punch Line (Though that's more due to the script rather than Uemura's admittedly good direction) and if I'm in a good mood that day I might begrudgingly admit Alternative was... fine, so I'll probably give Shoegaze a glance one of these days, but... why? Why is this, like, necessary? The idea of giving FLCL two whole sequels was bizarre on its face, so giving it two more given how those first two worked out is almost comical.

Honestly, this is feels so bizarre that it feels like there needs to be some explanation -- Like, is Toonami doing okay? I assume not as much as it used to, given how I assume most people have seen simulcasts and streaming as the "default" option for watching anime since at least the mid 2010s. Is that why there is now... four (Man, that feels wrong to type) sequels to FLCL now? (Maybe so, given how Progressive and Alternative were apparently successful enough to warrant further continuations.)

...Like, Tsurumaki isn't tied down by the Rebuild films anymore, guys. If you're really that starved for content, you could just let him direct something original and then slap "DIRECTED BY THE CREATOR OF FLCL" all over the marketing.

My guess is that stuff they produce themselves is seen as a reason watch the network since it means it's at least something that hasn't already streamed elsewhere. There is currently nothing in the Toonami line up that can't be watched in some form elsewhere. Sure, Crunchyroll hosts the subbed version, but the dubbed version isn't enough. Attack on Titan subbed is weeks ahead, and the dubbed version shows up online less than a day after Toonami. That, I think, at least explains the interest in producing things that it would fully control.

As for FLCL itself, it could be that they like it that much, or it could be that it carries enough name recognition to at least get some interest.

I think they're in a pickle here. Making their own content comes with a lot of cost, and quite a lot of waiting for it to be finished. On the flip side, the cheaper licensed content doesn't draw an audience when it's mostly stuff that is "old."

I didn't hate the FLCL sequels as much as others but I don't know who out there really wanted more FLCL anime. And most of the recent Toonami co-pros have been very lackluster and uninteresting. At least we're getting more Pillows music.

Some people just don't learn their lesson. Progressive was an utterly forgettable show that had none of the artistic flair and symbolism of the original. Alternative works well as a stand alone female coming of age drama but doesn't feel like it belongs with flcl at all.

Don't make sequels ro passion projects if you're not going to get the original director and writer. It wouldn't even be so bad if the producers hired people who had experience writing surrealist coming of age adolescent drama but they hired a bunch of no names.

I think if the first two FLCL sequels felt like actual sequels to the original with a cohesive story would have done better. I find it hard to invest my time in any show that doesn't seem to have a point plot/story-wise where I feel like my time/effort in watching the show feels rewarding. FLCL plots can be so random and convoluted that you have to do a bunch of extra research online to figure out what the hell is going on. Nobody has time for that anymore UNLESS the show is immensely entertaining which can't be said about the FLCL sequels. At best they were "meh"...

I thought Progressive and Alternative were mostly pretty solid but they both had some serious problems. Progressive is too overstuffed to where a lot of stuff doesn't really settle in well and you don't get a lot of opportunity to connect to the characters, while Alternative just sort of shrugs and gives up at the end and ruins the best character (Pets) in the process.

I'm onboard with the idea of more FLCL but hopefully these ones stick the landing better. ... Honestly hopefully Shoegaze feels more like Punch Line than it does Alternative.
