So a whole bunch of new characters this season, I had kind of liked seeing them explore the Abyss alone, but I suppose they have to interact with more characters at some point.

If you mean the characters in the other key imagery, (SPOILER) they appear in a flashback from a time before the founding of the crater town Orth, so they never actually get to interact...

I had heard that the second movie was required watching before this new season and from the number of new fantastical characters, I'm afraid that might be right. My problem is that I didn't see Dawn of the Deep Soul...

Dawn of the Deep Soul is the third movie, not the second movie. Like the first movie, the second film can be skipped since it's a compilation of episodes 9-13. Dawn of the Deep Soul picks up where season one ends and covers volume 5 of the manga.
