Y'know what, I have a lot of beefs with a lot of Nintendo's choices throughout the years, but kudos to them for this.
Officially acknowledging this stuff is a big deal, specially coming from a big gaming company in Japan.

Now this is cool. Hopefully, more Japanese companies start doing this.

Good on Nintendo for doing this.
Now only if the rest of the country would stop denying queer people their rights, that would be great.

Sony copycats!
just kidding, I don't know what pro-equality/LGBTQ policies Sony or any of its subsidiaries in Japan already have in place. Nevertheless, the more companies who adopt this the better for progress. Especially since partners don't always both work in the same company.

Good news! I am against any discriminations. Hope same sex relationships will be allowed in the whole Japan too.

Why would this ever be an issue? Amazing that something like this would even be controversial.

No, Sony will come out with their own set of employee benefits for same-sex couples, insist they're better, and try to influence all other Japanese corporations to adopt their policies over Nintendo's. In the long run, after 20 or 30 years, it will generally be agreed that the Sony policies are better, quality wise, but, for some reason, more companies will still have adopted the Nintendo policies, though some might have adopted a combination of the two. Um... you do realize that same-sex marriage is only legal in, last I knew, ONE East Asian country? (Taiwan) Australia hasn't legalized same-sex marriage and, if the US Supreme Court gets its way, some states in the US will no longer allow same-sex marriage either. Let's not even THINK about Russia! If you live somewhere that truly has never had any controversy over equal rights for same-sex couples, you're in the minority in the WORLD. EDIT: WAIT... You're from TEXAS?!?!?!? Wow... just wow...

Well given Chinas attitudes towards Taiwan, that might not be the case in a few years.
Honestly I thought Japan would be very liberal when it comes to homosexuality. I mean just look at how back in the 90s they had a lesbian couple on TV(Sailor Moon), where as the west censored(that word is approbate here right?) and in the 80s Banana Fish featured homosexuality relations/heavy implications between the two leads.

So, I think they were saying it less like they were surprised that it is controversial, but rather like they don't see why it's so controversial. In a "What's wrong with people?" sense. A subtle difference in meaning and tone, probably less obvious in text.

The article seems to focus specifically on the same-sex aspect of the change, but it appears that the actual main change here is Nintendo is recognizing common-law marriages, and it does not matter if it's opposite or same-sex couples. Most companies would rather not pay employees more benefits than they're legally required to, which is the main reason not every company would do this, so recognizing live-in couples as eligible for marriage benefits is going a step beyond than what is required of them to further benefit their employees . Also, apparently this happened over a year ago going off the date here?

Same-sex marriage is legal in Australia. Plus Australia is in Oceania, not East Asia. Lol
