NEWS: Nintendo to Acquire Visual Content Production Company Dynamo Pictures

The Pikmin shorts were very cute, I wonder what this acquisition will bring

Nintendo rarely acquires other companies and this one isn't a game developer, although they have assisted in the visual development of important titles. The fact that they have changed their name to Nintendo Pictures is interesting, Dynamo is focused on CGI animation so I don't expect an 2D anime based on Fire Emblem or Xenoblade, their future productions could be more like those Pikmin CG shorts which were pretty successful. Seeing how Sony and Microsoft adapted games like Uncharted and Halo into a movie and TV show it's no surprise that Nintendo will try to do something similar, especially with the Mario movie in the horizon. Dynamo could also help in the development of cutscenes in Nintendo games as well

It's probably just going to be their in-house CG studio like Visual Works is for Square-Enix; don't expect any feature films from this

I have a strange feeling Nintendo will buy Illumination from NBCUniversal if that Mario movie is successful.

Dynamo Pictures is known for its forward-thinking, breakthrough CG animation in Japan. Naturally drawing contention between fans of traditional style Japanese animation and newer style CG or CG-like animation. One thing that stands out is their animation style of "not" lowering the framerate in their CG animation to mimic traditional lower frame animation, insisting that more fluid animation can be charming and beautiful in its own way with its own merits.

Their last big project was the latest Monster Strike series that was animated in full CG at what looks like no less than 24 frames per second, while still maintaining the cell-shaded look of traditional animation. The animation I think is really beautiful with fast, fluid action action scenes and smooth motion-captured character animation, and expressive facial animation. And the best part... the series was all free on YouTube for everyone to enjoy in both Japan and the rest of the world with subtitles. The team at Dynamo was really on a roll to convince anime fans that CG animation can be enjoyable if done right.

It is unfortunate that we won't be able see the team at Dynamo Pictures use their craft to animate stories for other intellectual properties other than those belonging to Nintendo from here on. It makes me sad a little since the Monster Strike series left such a great impression with me and I hoped we could see more stories in the future.
