I'm gonna assume they're adapting the general concept of "guy investigates his pen pal's disappearance and possible crimes" rather then going for a straight adaptation, but I'm honestly curious to see how it turns out. I always wonder how live action adaptations of more obscure properties turn out rather then obvious failures like Dragon Ball

They did a surprisingly great job adapting this for american audiences. I know purists will be mad about the changes but I think the concept is good enough to do something fun with and it looks pretty effective!
