Mayumi Tanaka is a legend and she's led such an inspirational career path. She has given her all and then some with Luffy, so I can't blame her for wanting to retire after the series is over. She's more than earned it.

Man, with the bunch of news about One Piece I've been reading lately that have this bittersweet feel to them (like this one), I'm thinking that the "One Piece closer to the end" thing is now more true than when Oda said the same thing in the past.

I would hate for someone else to have to take over, even if they are good in the role. After over a thousand epidotes, nearly 20 Movies, and dozens of video games and OVAs, she is too imbedded into the role to be replaced.

Well, at the age she'll probably be at when it finally ends...I can understand. I just hope she can live to play Luffy to finale of One Piece.

Well, Tanaka herself is Luffy's second seiyu.
Speaking of swan songs, it seems that Cynthia is currently one for Tomo Sakurai, considering the current big match with Ash and her in PWC.

Considering Tanaka is 67 years old and the at the pace the anime is going, it is a high possibility she gets what she wants... unless Toei sneaks her with a new DB movie/series that will make Kuririn her last role, but she can always decline. If something does happan before OP anime ends, they can always go back to Luffy's original seiyuu Urara Takano.

That's like saying Sean Connery is the second actor to play James Bonds. It's correct, but it's just a half hour OVA that was made by a different studio.

People like Mayumi Tanaka are a huge reason that I believe every anime fan needs to go back to before the 90s and listen to old voice actors. I don't know how she does it, but Luffy still sounds amazing with only a few signs of aging. That said, no one can stay on top forever. I pray Oda can wrap up this story satisfyingly before she needs to be replaced. Even if she doesn't die before the anime ends, how long can a woman her age keep up with all the screaming that comes with playing a character like Luffy?
