I think I'm like 1-2 seasons behind on RWBY, I honestly can't remember. I forget about the series for years at a time and every time I remember to watch it, I'm like... "that was neat". I like RWBY, it's just never been something I look forward to.

Well it was until Ice Queendom. I have genuinely loved every episode of this series with the exception of episode 3 as it tried to do way too many things at once. Maybe it's the dream imagery, maybe it's the fact that this is the first time I've been invested in Weiss's character or maybe it's the most fun I have had with Shaft show since "And yet the town moves". I know this will probably be a one and done situation but I have hopes that it will get a sequel focusing one of the other members of the team (preferably Blake).

I’m not as harsh on Ice Queendom as TWIA, but I definitely think the pacing of this show is really off. Like, they bolted out of the gate to get us to this dream world, and now they’re dragging their feet without giving us any fun mental deep dives into Weiss (or any of the other team members) until the latest episode. Like, the whole point of this is to get into Weiss’ head *about* her repressed feelings and fantasy racism, but it kind of felt like IQ was more interested in giving us a tour than giving us a story. I’m glad the show is finally picking up, but I can’t help but feel that this show either needed more time in the recap stage to really solidify Team RWBY or fewer episodes to improve the pacing.

Honestly, as a RWBY fan and specially of Weiss, of course i'm digging it and even enjoying it, but I do heavily agree on the "it caters more towards already investing fans than newcomers" arguments.

I don't mind some things in the plot as the streching of Weiss' nightmare arc since the name of this anime is Ice Queendom after all, but ngl i'd enjoy it more if it gave us a heavier dig into Weiss' repressed traumas instead of a very meh "show don't tell" attempt of storytelling. There are ideas that i like though, like how she idolizes Pyrrha to the point of seeing her as this singing deity, and also how she sees the rest of team JNPR as nothing but background characters. I also like how her family is represented in her dreams; but it's just that, ideas i personally see as good, but barely developed in the anime. At best it gives us glimses of it with Whitley as an annoying PicoDevimon of sorts, but yeah, it's more centered on giving visuals with slight storytelling than telling something with them altogether.

But i mean, we're only 8 episodes in, you never know, and I'm still digging this. Hell, this isn't the worst i've seen.

Still, and im being completely honest here, i definetely believe someone somewhere behind the screenplay for the anime decided to cather only to the alreading investing fans like me, instead of trying something a little bit more risqué in the story telling department to engage with newcomers.

Jokes still on me because im still watching and enjoying it.

While I understand why they didn’t just remake RWBY from the ground up with Rooster Teeth still making more of it (although given the state of their parent company Warner, Ruby and the rest of the girls might be for sale sooner rather than later), I kind of wish they did? You know, let some things breathe, file off the edges, etc.

It’s got problems but it’s clear there is some enthusiasm to do things with the characters the main series couldn’t do or just didn’t get around to. Not to mention the animation, while heavily varying in quality, is a quantum leap from its humble origins in Unreal Engine.

I haven't watched anything past the fifth season of RWBY, so I was curious about how the actual anime adaptation does it. It does make me curious, but it sure as hell doesn't make me confident they could do it any better though.

Curious about the constant hate-boner this article has for Jaune though, because Jaune was one of the few characters I liked from the first 3 seasons -- probably because he one of the few that actually had character development. It's weird that for a show called RWBY, there's not a lot of development focusing on the main four in those seasons.

I gave up on RWBY; but I guess I'll do a 3-episode run of Queendom just to see what it's like.....

I want to watch this show but everytime I’m about to I remember Jaune is in it and I don’t. I disagree with calling him skim milk though. That implies the problem is him having no personality, when he does. His personality is annoying and dumb as a brick so other characters (mostly Pyrrha) can exposition at him.

Ironically, I'm a big RWBY fan, but while I do think it's really cool that the franchise has grown enough that things like this are possible, I was never particularly excited for IQ as a *story*. I was never especially interested in Weiss, but I think the Schnee family as a whole is pretty fascinating in a tragicomedy sort of way, so I was hoping we'd get some additional insight into that dynamic, but it's really just the Weiss show for the most part. I'm slightly more interested now that Ruby's weaknesses and insecurities are getting highlighted, given that it took a while for her to show those same cracks in the main series, and I do think Jaune is a decent pick to help her out of this funk, although I do hope Weiss factors into this, because what will the point of all of this be otherwise lol. Show is fine, 6/10, may watch again for the dub and that's it. Happy it exists at least.

I'm not really vibing with the Jaune hate though. Yes, he's an annoying dope, a loser, pretty useless and incompetent but...that's what character development is for. He's aware of all of these things about himself and loathes it, and wants to grow out of the "dopey comic relief" label because being treated like that all his life has shattered his confidence, and he shows incredible drive for self-improvement because of it. He's definitely not my favorite, but he's honestly fine, and he's a great foil for Ruby.

I do wish the rest of Team JNPR had a little more to contribute here tho lol. Seeing Pyrrha wear the same dress that Weiss wore at the apex of her development and growing rebellion in Season 4 has me very curious, but seeing that she hasn't really done anything despite the fact that the early episodes seemed to suggest that Weiss' weird obsession with her would get additional focus, is a little disappointing
