This manga is one of my favorite slice of life brain cleansers.
The anime seems to be covering all the material, but it's making some odd rearrangements of things. For example, in the manga, Ohagi was introduced before the hospital visit. They also seem to be condensing some story lines and moving around some conversations, so the entire thing plays out in one episode, when they were more spread out in the manga.
I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing, but it does make things feel more rushed to me. By moving scenes around, the emotional moments didn't hit quite as hard for me, because it didn't feel like the same amount of time had past, and the relationships had not been built up enough.
But this may only be because I've read the manga. Anime-only people might not even notice.
I still love it all in any form.

This is my favorite new series this season, no contest. What really sells it is Hosoya's work in the title role. Where someone like Tsuda would've worked ok, I don't think his gravel quite fits this character, and someone with a higher register wouldn't work at all for the edgier parts. Hosoya's got that softness to his voice that can make him sound really dangerously psycho when he's being so laid-back about threatening people. But at the same time, that softness makes him believable when he's being sympathetic as well. It's just a great duality that he makes sound so effortless.

I don't know what the hell episode 4 was. I'm just glad it was all a dream and hope they don't do it again.

I don't know what episode 4 was either. It is not in the manga, at least not in what's been translated to English.
The weird message they ran at the begining of the episode made me think it would be a low effort filler because of Covid or technical issues, but it seemed to have too much effort put into it for that.

This has been one of my favorites this season. I understand the change up, compared to the manga, to help pull viewers quickly into the characters. Episode 4 I enjoyed as a social commentary about the YouTube economy.

So Kirishima didn't kill the thugs, but the guy who showed up later did? Shocked Do we know yet who he is (can't recall if he's been lurking in earlier episodes or not)? Seems like there'd be some serious fallout from that.

Hosoya is just eating this role alive. With barely a change in tone he can turn on a dime from gentle child whisperer to scary psychopath. It's not just the difference in what he's saying, but when he's quietly threatening people there's something very subtle added underneath that soothing voice that would make you break out in a cold sweat if it were directed at you. I've always like his work, but this role is making me a hard core fan. Smile

I believe spoiler[the guy is an underclass men of Kirashima’s from middle school. He appears in the last chapter of vol. 2 in the manga. It will be interesting how Kirashima will handle him.]

Edit: added spoiler tags. Errinundra.

I'm still enjoying the show but I am growing tired of Kirishima's gay friend being the center of dated jokes about paranoia around gay people. Like I guess it's nice Kirishima will still interact with the guy but it is growing stale that he keeps treating him suspicious solely because he's gay every time he appears. Even moreso because they've known each other for so long.

I get what you mean, but when I think about it, he's not treating Rei with suspicion because he's gay, but because he keeps playfully hitting on him and he never knows what Rei's going to spring on him. It reminds me of a kitten energetically bopping all over its mom until she gets tired and pins it to the floor with a paw. Smile

The dynamic we see between them isn't because he's gay, but because the two have such diametrically opposed personalities. It's the same dynamic as is often shown with hetero pairs - see Sanji and Nami, e.g. She doesn't hate Sanji, and would even risk her life for him, but she still treats him like shit because he's always dogging her. Compared to Nami, Kirishima is barely rude to Rei. If Rei were a woman, I don't doubt that Kirishima would react exactly the same way to her teasing him.

Though even going with that it feels like they're playing up the whole gag of gay people always going after straight people which is a very old and tiring anime trope. It wasn't funny when Gurren Laggen did it 20 years ago either. We also saw earlier in the show when Kirishima reacted negatively to his other friend had his hair done up in braids.

I get that, and there are parts of me that see it the same way. They're really dancing on the edge here, but they manage to pull back just before crossing the line, for me anyhow. So to me it feels like Rei himself is playing with that trope as part of his teasing. He's known Kirishima for years, and knows he doesn't have a hope in hell, but still does it for the entertainment value of getting a reaction out of the steadfastly deadpan Kirishima. I'm not saying that's an admirable trait there, just maybe not quite as toxic as it first appears? And I think it would feel very different if they didn't have that long history between them.

If Kirishima really truly hated it, he could definitely put a stop to it. We know this and Rei knows this. So he must be getting something out of tolerating it.

I really liked this episode a lot too. I think I hadn't before registered that Kanami was Miyuki's sister and Yaeka's aunt. I guess I thought she was just some long time secretary to Kazuhiko or aide to the family or something, so I'm glad I got that clarified finally.

As someone who is caught up on the manga, the one thing that keeps throwing me off with the anime is how much they skip around. They will take scenes from multiple volumes, and multiple story lines, and mash them together into a different story line in the anime. They've bounced around the manga timeline so much I find it very disconcerting.
It isn't bad, per say. Since most of the scenes are about character building it doesn't really affect the plot. spoiler[Though the villain they are using in the anime isn't actually introduced until volume 5, after the resolution of the conflict, I assume, they're building to. And the anime seems to be using him instead of a completely different one that was in the manga earlier. Maybe?] But they have skipped, at least for now, some really nice relationship establishing scenes, and moved around others. It can take me out of the episode when they've been following something from volume 3 and then suddenly throw in a scene from volume 5. And, for me at least, it makes things hit a bit differently than they did reading the manga.
I guess my point in bringing this up is that, if anyone is thinking about picking up the manga, which I do recommend, I would finish watching the anime first before starting it. Just to prevent the disconnect I keep getting while watching.
(So far, I haven't seen any scenes past volume 5, which is as far as they've translated into English. (I believe they're on volume 8 in Japanese.) And they've got enough they haven't done yet to finish out the episodes, so I don't think they're going to get past volume 5 material. But they skip around so much, I may be wrong.)

Old habits die hard, and that leads us to perhaps the most interesting and perplexing sequence of the episode. He comes face to face with the villain and puts a bullet in his head… only not. It was merely a projection of what he wanted to do, but he ultimately could not bring himself to take that action and forsake his role as Yaeka's caretaker.

I was more perplexed that Kirishima was conflicted enough about everything to try Russian Roulette -- or was that a projection as well?

There was also that bullet hole in the pillar so did he actually shoot the gun but only after that guy had left?
