Focus in on TOKYOPOP's interview.

Quote:
“Initially these programs were in print. Our Rising Stars of Manga competition, launched in 2003, has yielded over 22 contracts to develop original IP for graphic novels and cross-media products. Rising Stars finalists’ stories are now also featured in manga viewers on our Web site for user voting that results in a People’s Choice award -- along with awards from our staff judges.

And I really have to question who actually does the judging for RSoM. I've seen better talent in NewtypeUSA. And i've seen better writing on fanfiction.net.

The OEM stuff is either you like one part, and hate the other. The story is killer, but the artwork looks like some retarded kid was given a splash page, black and white watercolors, and his restraints taken off. Or the Artwork looks like it should be under contract with Marvel Comics, but the story sounds like a Yaoi Fanfic gone horribly wrong.

Quote:
“The TOKYOPOP website changed radically in July 2006 and became a place where users could upload their manga or comics for free. It’s a popular site. We get over a million unique visitors per month, and each visit is long. Fellow users vote on uploaded manga & comics using “POPS”, or popularity points. The most popular uploads rise to the top of the rankings. We’ve approached creators who caught our users’ & editors’ attention and are working with some now.

I might wanna add, there are ways to "boost" such POPS as they call it. Sometimes as simple as deleting the cookie to TOKYOPOP.com and repeat voting.

Quote:
To date, TOKYOPOP’s online manga and user uploads have been free to view, although Ross admitted that they are considering various methods to monetize.

Here's hoping they don't go the route of the RIAA and MPAA and figure out a viable format where people can download them for personal use. Heck, you could watermark the image nowadays, and didn't they catch one guy who personally photographed the new Harry Potter Book days before the release date, all because he forgot to delete his Digital camera's Serial # from the metadata?
