I'm actually surprised it lasted this long. The big few just dominate the gaming scene. Yes, they might have gotten some notable titles, but nothing I would call a high demand exclusive.

There may have been other factors driving Stadia's failure, including the gaming cloud method.

For those unaware, cloud gaming requires both download and upload speeds, which some ISPs have high download speeds, but low upload speeds (I think Xfinity/Comcast offers between 5Mbps and 200Mbps, of which most don't know that even their $90/month model only offers 20Mbps, but their download speed is 900Mbps). I believe to play games at 1080p, it is recommended to have 25Mbps alone. Meaning that you could be paying $90/month, but still have issues playing on Stadia. Spotty internet also is a factor, as well as data caps on internet data.

Just think. This service launched hoping it would derail consoles like Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox with its cloud gaming. And, it's already history. Throw in the amount of money that Google (and its parent company Alphabet) spent on this thing, and this thing is a colossal mishap. How embarrassing.

I'm not beaten up or surprised over this. But I wonder if it's possible for any new player to enter the console market at this day and age. Microsoft was only able to do it back in the 2000s because they're Microsoft and could offset the yearly losses of their videogame department with other things. Even at this point I'm finding myself wondering about PlayStation given the lack of exclusives and everything being on PC now. Switch and PC are my only real gaming platforms anymore, with the Switch being mainly Nintendo exclusive games.

I can’t remember if there’s a specific term for it, but it probably applies here… Obviously Silicon Valley have some of the best computer infrastructure in the world and super fast internet speeds. Silicon Valley then incorrectly assumes that a game or online service they make has the same telecommunications and computer processing speeds as some guy in Iowa’s laptop which connects to 6mbps Internet and whirs like a broken helicopter running (or cloud streaming) even small file size indie games.

I imagine this is what happened with Stadia…

I would think if anyone could see this happening they wouldn’t have bothered unless the people at Google are like Netflix’s CEO who likes cancelling shows.

The Xbox brand has gotten where it’s gotten with only a handful of exclusives many of which Microsoft no longer publishes (Project Gotham Racing) or are in flux (Fable). While exclusives can bolster and even move your platform it’s really debatable especially in the modern era of a system need them.

Actually Zalis116, Stadia's demise didn't surprised me. When it first came out, I was skeptical because even though it has Google name on there, I don't know if Stadia can hold candle against Nintendo, Sony, & Microsoft (TBH, I thought the first Xbox and the Xbox franchise would fail, but I was proven wrong). But oh boy, after seeing report of Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo's current & next-gen consoles getting more sales and Stadia barely made a dent, I thought the Stadia was done for. Seeing the announcement coming from IGN, CNet, etc.... I knew Stadia was done for. Cloud-based gaming hold a lot of promise, but right now our internet infrastructure in the US is not sufficient enough to do cloud-based gaming (rural area in the US has insufficient internet connection), and low bandwidth made Stadia not quite sturdy for this generation.

Google can try Stadia again in the near future, I mean anybody remember Nokia N-gage? It pre-dated Iphones/smartphone gaming and it was way ahead of it's time. But sadly, the N-gage's longevity didn't last long when mobile phone gaming was still not good like today's smartphone gaming, it was a victim of bad timing and technological limits. But could Nokia try again with the N-gage revival this time given that Iphones/smartphones gaming is now at an all-time high? I think Nokia could this time (assuming they redesign the N-gage to resemble a real smartphone and not a taco abomination).

My point is that Google really need to wait until cloud gaming is robust & improved and free of major technological issues/limits so they can re-launch Stadia.

I reckon they will go 3rd party after the PS5, given that they have started publishing on other platforms and how they are only making games with mainstream appeal. The days of lost leaders are long over for PlayStation, game sales seem more important than console sales. That's the direction Jim Ryan seems to what to go.

When asked about this at the outset, the response was that ISPs would, for some reason, come around to it and start offering what people needed to make Stadia more viable. It's not encouraging that part of the business was based on some delusion that companies with monopolies would decide to be nice for no given reason.
