NGL, maybe they will rise back to the top with this initiative (which I still find stupid even if other services do it), but I'm already done with Netflix, so I'll be reading the next (probably dumb) idea they have.

Every time I see any advertisement when I stream a show, my first thought is always, "Really wish I'd pirated this instead."

Well, least it's not every 5 minutes like some services. Imo this may be even better deal, watch 2 eps, take a 5 min break, come back and watch some more. Pretty handy to prevent unhealthy bingewatching.

4 minutes of 15 second ads per hour means every hour you'd be getting 16 ads???? You'd be getting an ad break every 3-4 minutes???? Am I getting these numbers right? Because this sounds like an insufferable way to watch anything |

You definitely aren't getting the numbers right, I'm pretty sure it's meant to be 4-5 minutes of ads per hour in blocks, and those ads are individually 15 seconds or 30 seconds. Usually when I watch Hulu the ad breaks are like 90 seconds to 180 second at a time |

What’s the point in paying for something which still has ads?

Yeah, no, GTFO. The amount of ads is already ridiculous, but paired with 720p max resolution??! In the year of our lord 2022 when even most low-end smartphones and tablets support 1080p, making the difference in quality obvious even on mobile devices, never mind on larger screens? And they want people to pay for this? A "free with ads + 720p" plan - sure, that would be OK. But asking people to pay for something and then they not only get ads but get only 720p resolution, that's just ridiculous. Again this is one of those things where they're trying to make users move to higher tiers not by offering attractive and flexible plans, but by making lower tier subscriptions unbearably crappy. People pay for cable / satellite tv with ads. But yeah, this is a hard no for me. |

I think that's still the norm in the US. In the UK our paid TV channel has no ads (just short intermissions about their own shows) and the rest of the main TV channels (both digital and satellite) are free with ads. The only people here who still pay for TV packages have a really specific interest channel or are just sort of lumped with it as part of a pack-in deal with their internet. I wouldn't pay to watch with ads and I can't imagine many people would. |

The only ads I can stomach from a streaming service these days is Tubi.

About time. Netflix should have done this years ago. I don't know what some of you guys are talking about. An ad-supported option would not affect any of you who still want to pay more for no ads. Video streaming services are expensive and I rather pay as little as possible especially as there are more and more services each day, that stuff adds up per month. Some of you guys have even mentioned how you feel a lot more video streaming services are starting to be like cable. Well, the solution is we pay as little as possible for these services. Especially when you think of Tubi and Freevee. Ad-supported, lower-cost options being available always made sense not everyone is so privileged to be able to pay for all these overpriced services. Can't see why it doesn't occur to people that most people paid (some still do) way more for cable television with ads. Not only that I don't mind it if I don't have to pay as much or anything. During that time, I can go to the bathroom or get some snacks. It's not that bad. This is the best news I have heard from Netflix. Alright!

Netflix will also upgrade the resolution of its Basic (no ads) subscription from 480p to 720p, the same as Tubi. Tubi currently has the best ad engine in the streaming business (and a ton of Japanese language content). If Netflix (and Microsoft) can deliver an ad experience to match Tubi's, then I'm all on board.

No, thank you. I'd rather wait 5 minutes at once to download it than play it instantly and have it interrupted every 15 minutes. At 720p.

Does anyone know if there's any pricing info for anywhere else available? You make a good point, but 6.99 usd still seems really expensive for an ad-supported tier to me. This is about what I pay for Netflix now, so I'd expect a low cost ad-supported option to actually be low-cost. Personally I don't know why anyone would pay for cable or sky or anything nowadays, it feels like a relic to me, but we have a lot of free TV services here.
