Huh, had no idea Garden of Remembrance was just going to be less than 20 minutes long. Can't wait to see it, along with the feature-length film she's making with SARU mentioned at the end of the interview!

I also don't remember it being mentioned that it was gonna be a short, but I'm really excited for it to come out on streaming.
I'm glad there's confirmation that she's working on a new feature film, can't wait to see what it'll be about |

I have deep respect for Yamada and her vision. Heike Monogatari, alongside Odd Taxi, was my favorite anime of 2021. If that's an indicator of what's to expect of her collaborations with Science Saru, we have plenty of good times ahead.
Best of luck to her in all of the upcoming projects. |

I never saw Liz and the blue bird as gay so I was very confused when everyone else thought of it that way.
I'm glad this question was asked and Yamada-san was able to clear things out. |

I mean, it's been a while since I watched it (I scrubbed through it quickly for this post) but is it really that big of a leap in logic? spoiler[ Constant watching from afar can be seen as pining. The fixation on Mizore wanting to hug Nozomi, straight up referred to you as the "I love you hug" (using daisuki, though I understand there's a lot of nuance). In the emotional climax there's a lot of quotes from Mizore like "As long as I can be with you, I don't care about anything else" "You're my everything" "You're special to me" "I love everything about you" (though she uses suki) Nozomi at one point says "I'm not the kind of girl you think I am"] A lot of this feels like very textbook queer coding, whether it was intentional or not. And in case you think this is just me projecting, I showed the movie to my mainly straight family a while back and they were able to pick up on gay vibes as well. Also, Yamada never outright says that neither of them are gay, just that the film was about their adolescence (which by the way, is when many queer people realize their feelings). This post isn't meant to attack you by the way, I'm just giving my perspective on why many people would think that the film is gay. |

I'm currently having an online discussion in German about this topic with another person as well. Whereas my discussion partner is totally convinced that spoiler[Mizore is gay] and that's it's a story about one's own queerness and unrequited (sexual) desire, I'm more inclined to see the story as one of those typical japanese movies about "youth" and adolescence (yuri) feelings where platonic love ideals are heightened to the max (with doesn't mean that sexual desires are immediately non-valid. It's just that I didn't put that much attention to possible gayness and sexual desires like others do while watching the movie). |

Sure. From my point of view I'm usually not able to pick up on these hints unless it's made obvious. So you've given me some insight as to why it could be seen that way. I'm not 100% convinced but I do see where y'all coming from. |
