I get the comparison to Stampede from a technical perspective (and it being the last theatrical release), but I definitely enjoyed this movie way more to be honest, even if it isn't a much of a visual feast. Red may not have an intricately deep story (it is still a Jump movie after all), but at least it felt like a movie with some emotional stakes. Stampede just felt like a fanfic with a very unmemorable original villain designed to have as many cameos as possible - whether they made sense or not. A celebration of the franchise for sure, but one that can't come close to being replicated outside seeing it on an opening weekend in a theater full of One Piece fans. Can't speak on it being a story-specific inverse of the "Stampede problem" because I'm not actually in Wano yet anyways, but I get the idea!

Side note, I'm happy I at least finished WCI earlier this week considering characters from that arc do show up here. The dub really released those last few episodes under the wire haha

As we are actually getting fewer shoujo and josei series now than we did 10-20 years ago back when Kodocha could get 100+ episodes (to speak nothing of Sailor Moon and the still ongoing Pretty Cure) plus Nodame Cantabile and Chihayafuru could get 3 seasons from powerhouse studios like JC Staff and Madhouse, Anno would do His and Her Circumstances and Polar Bear Cafe could get 50 episodes - and would have gotten more had Pierrot not infuriated the mangaka - maybe the industry could focus on those for movies? Shoujo - or at least stories with female heroines with significant romantic subplots, are what Ghibli (previously) and now Makoto Shinkai and Mamoru Hosada focus on anyway. Not really a fan of shoujo or josei, but the anime industry needs it and their genre/demo fans deserve it.

As far as shonen adaptations, the very worst is Hunter × Hunter: Phantom Rouge stuff which not only is 100% filler but actually changes characters and themes (the idea that Illumi would murder random children just to dissuade Killua from making friends with Gon was absurd; it was even stated in-universe by a phantom troupe member that the puppets should not have caused Gon and especially Killua nearly that much trouble, plus HxH isn't a "power of friendship" show like Fairy Tail anyway).

Yes, the best is stuff like Demon Slayer: Mugen Train and Naruto: The Last which adapt major canon arcs. The problem is that the box office for such things tend to be more like Naruto: The Last - $20 million - than Mugen Train's half a billion or even Jujustu Kaisen O's $200 million, making it far more profitable to save the canon stuff for the TV series. Also, even Mugen Train's insane success didn't do squat for Demon Slayer season 2. Just more proof that non canon material - as well as side stories that don't really change the status quo - make more financial sense for movies. Just make them better than My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission!

As for One Piece: Red, looks like they went the same route as spoiler[Avengers: Infinity War] by making a spoiler[genocidal villain] the star of the movie while making the actual franchise regulars ensemble side characters. They were even similar in that spoiler[both Thanos and Uta were unable to get over their personal grief and guilt] and spoiler[both knew their actions were wrong, though perhaps Uta more so than Thanos]. So Red was an entertaining and on some level fascinating film that got the job done.

One of the more fascinating aspects of Film Red is that there’s a lot of canon content hidden in this film, despite not fitting into the manga’s timeline. For example, we learn:
spoiler[* Shanks is from the Figarland Family, implying he’s one of the Heavenly Dragonfolk.
* The Red Hair Pirates’ abilities.
* The existence of a Demon King, in Tot Musica.
* Sunny-kun is likely the Thousand Sunny’s Klabautermann.
* Observation Haki allows one to see from another’s perspective (Usopp/Yasopp).]

It makes me wonder how relevant a lot of this stuff will be in the endgame. Uta is confirmed to be a canon character, as she appears in chapter 1055. If you’ve watched the film, read Oda’s notes on Uta.
