Anime of the Year.

I am happy that this kind of crazy and over the top anime is still being made. I hope more people come to like it and that it does well for Sentai/HIDIVE.

You have to mention some movies though as this series wears its love for American movies like an apron. I'm honestly glad the following episodes weren't as hyper as the first because that'd be exhausting. And they managed to replace that energy with more precise jokes. That ashtray joke from episode 3 was just so beautifully framed...

However, I never thought of comparing Ranko to Roberta from Black Lagoon as she's based on the Terminator. Ranko's more.... De Niro like...

Don't overlook the small but critical contributions of Panda-kun to the cafe's success.

The moment I realized what this anime is about (underground/criminal world built by otakus) I laughed my ass off Laughing Amazing concept, I hope the whole series is gonna be as enjoyable as these 3 episodes!

I'm love the opening and ending of the show.

Also, anything with their Otaku handler who is constantly bringing up their sweets money cracks me up.

Ah yes, the true successor of Zombieland Saga with the expectations subverting - now with yakuza LARPing everything that you know about Akiba-kei, and I am glad it got enough recognition because the show is indeed unironically fun with delivering that concept.

And yeah, the third episode was damn great and cemented Ranko as one of the best characters of the season. It maybe not have had that wham effect as the first episode ending, but they delivered so much from its own comedy aspect of making jokes from yakuza eiga tropes to straight referencing Ashita no Joe - to character building with Ranko and Zoya, and that nice MMA action on the end as a cherry on top. Honestly, it probably was the best episode up to this date.

It's great to see an anime take its ridiculous premise and go all-in with it for comedy. Some other shows seem afraid to lean into their own absurdity, or try too hard to play it safe, resulting in mediocrity. That Akiba Maid is so willing to embrace its gimmick makes it so much fun to watch each week.

It's rather bold of the writers to keep the Russian character and Russian monologue, considering a certain other show this season decided to change its Russian character's nationality.

Okachimachi-chan is the (literally) silent MVP keeping the cafe barely afloat.

Heck, they even actually picked probably the only one existing native Russian speaker among the seiyuu to voice Zoya - instead of just hiring the japanese person and let them do the lines in foreign language like usual.

Whoever was in charge of picking cast - I applaud to that person.

Hats off, absolutely terrific review! fully conveyed what I thought but can never put on paper so skillfully. Episode 3 reminds me a lot of Guy Ritchie movie trope! I can't pinpoint the earlier episodes though, but my prime suspect is Beat Takeshi movies among others.

I'm hoping they venture into Hong Kong triad parody movie ala Men Suddenly In Black in the future Very Happy

Oh yeah, the ending song never fails to get a cheezy grin out of me. Moe moe kyun! And the opening is exactly the right sort of 90s+maids+insanity to go with the show.

The show was obviously going in the direction it went from the trailers and intro... but I don't think I was expecting it to go quite that much all in as it did.

Ranko is clearly a goddess. A traumatized, psychopathic, ultra-violent idiot. And a goddess.

Manager-san meanwhile... well I guess you gotta admire the enthusiasm with which she licks boots? For all the weird pep-talks she gives the team, her plan is somehow always to be the best at failing. Every decision she makes is terrible. With Ranko and Zoya on the team she could probably go to war with the entire district. But it's never going to occur to her that she stands a chance at actually winning. With Ranko and Zoya on the team war is almost certainly what we're getting... but manager-san is going to be dead weight the entire time, looking for every opportunity to make things worse. She's great.

Favorite anime of the season, so far. By a LOT.

If you had simply told me the premise was "Maid Cafes meets Sopranos," I would have been all in, but this was better than I even expected.

And the opening sequence just SLAMS. Gets me geared up for each episode.

And honest to a fault in an idiotic way. I really appreciated the fact that she left a note about "the body you had me take care of."

She tried to talk to her, wasn't able to, so left a note. Pure, simple, literal. Ranko's kinda autistic, isn't she?

Despite being the ultra violent one, she's kinda the straight-woman of the operation. There's no pretense, no dressing things up, no hiding from the reality. Being a maid to Ranko is ruthless loyalty to her crew, and whatever measures that entails and she never pretends otherwise nor seeks to hide it. Little Nagomi couldn't hope for a better guardian goddess really.

Though Shiipon did good this episode too.

I liked episode 4 better than the previous two, probably because head writer Yoshihiro Hiki was responsible for the script this time. Love how it initially seemed to glorify Sano's brand of brainwashing, only to flip the script at the end with Shiipon's rebellion.
