In some ways, I think NYNY suffers from the fact that it's very clearly meant to be read in large chunks with a space of time between them. It was an irregular serialization--part of it was done during Rawaga's work on AkaBoku and part of it was done after--so I think it makes sense that Kain and Mel's lives seem to be rather, uh, "eventful" when looked at from that perspective.

Still, I think Ragawa's sensitivity and nuance when it comes to characterization comes through in the end. While I'd probably prefer a slightly less bombastic plot, I think my real big gripe with the series is that we don't get to spend as much time from Mel's perspective as I'd like. While we do get flashes to him during the serial killer plot, I think it would have been more harrowing to have spent more time with his POV prior to those events.
