I've always figured the end would be the titular brothers taking man's first steps on Mars together

This is honestly speaking, the greatest manga ever created, and not mentioned enough!! Although, the art is not as detailed as some other manga, the story, its messages, and its characters are unmatched in the entirety of this medium!

Will never forget how Space Bros has inspired me throughout my life. Thank you for your work, Koyama sensei!

I had no idea this was still going. I haven't heard anything about the manga since the anime adaptation.

15 years and almost 400 chapters, and counting. Must be quite rare for a manga about adults with (apparently) no fantasy or fanservice to run for so long. The extreme length is the main thing that kept me from watching/reading it, though... didn't even realize the 99-episode anime was barely half of the story.

Supposedly the voice acting in once scene was recorded on the actual ISS, a world first. But does it still count as a "world first" if it didn't happen on Earth?

It's actually more common than you think.

From Golgo 13, Cooking Papa, Edomae no Shun, Oishinbo, Kariage-kun, etc.
These kind of manga are extremely popular among adults in Japan, especially "salaryman" demographic.

This genre usually only adapted into live-action, not anime.
That's why people outside Japan rarely know them.

I could see Kariage-kun getting the salaryman manga treatment in this case, since it's an extremely light-hearted, subtle and just as clever South Park of a sort, in terms of sociopolitical thematics and critiques.

But I must say, Golgo 13 is very old school hard-boiled and packs quite a bit of fanservice in several of the targets. Some rather rapey content in some cases too.

And the other 3 are cooking manga, which are extremely popular with any demographic at all.
