Whenever I see a purely evil person, I name them Klaus Pope. MONSTER is pretty disturbing in its slow burn.

I'm curious why Netflix didn't make all of it available considering it's not like Monster is still in production. Maybe they decided that all 74 episodes at once would be 'too much' and be sort of a deterrent? I'm guessing they have data that gives them an idea of how many episodes people will binge in a certain period.

While I’m thrilled Monster is finally more readily available, I will admit to being slightly crushed that it’s frankly top-notch dub remains out of reach.

If they got David Sylvian's original ED song back, I wonder if they also restored the original broadcast soundtrack. Viz's release (which was not Viz's fault, btw) used most if not all of the same music, but swapped songs around for no apparent reason. Also, it would be a dream if they also managed to restore "Be My Baby" and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" to their rightful placements.

Same. That dub is really quite good. I'm one of those few who bought the original DVD box and it's still one of the most prized pieces in my collection, even if they only did that small part.

This show is so good. And yes, Urasawa uses quite a bit of politics for the story. His Master Keaton series also plays around with similar themes in a more episodic way, for those who might be interested. It's a crime procedural (Keaton is an insurance investigator) with a heavy focus on Europe post-Berlin Wall fall.

The really frustrating thing is that the whole series aired dubbed on TV, and it's all that quality, but there's never been any way to own the later episodes of that version.

Oh God. I'm worried Netflix is going to try and make their own dub even though there's a billion ways it could go wrong and the already existing dub was perfectly fine.

Maybe there are some rights issues with the dub, I doubt it's a money thing as how much is an old dub for an obscure Anime really going to cost.

It seems likely that what Netflix has is the same as the Japanese DVD version, which includes the ED songs and original soundtrack but does not include certain other licensed music like "Be My Baby."

In my opinion the dub is just "okay." Maybe a little disappointing for a show of this caliber. Personally, I didn't think the casting of Liam O'Brien or Richard Epcar particularly fit their characters. Also this is a show with a huge cast, and many episodes have a dozen throwaway side characters. But maybe they didn't have that many actors available for this production or something, because especially later in the show there are episodes where it is obvious that the same actor is playing 3 characters. And then there is the fact that the dub uses the international soundtrack instead of the original Japanese one (this is likely true of other language dubs too, not just the English dub). Comparison of the original soundtrack vs. international soundtrack is here:

The fact that they only made the first 30 episodes available is such an embarassment...
I'd rather torrent the series than be made a fool of

That was blast from the past, thanks for this TWIA! I once read quite far into manga, now that I learned it's available on Netflix, even if just first episodes, means I can now watch this legally and increase the views in Netflix algorithm.

Im so hyped to only watch half of my favorite show, a show that came out almost 20 years ago, and with no English Dub to boot.
