Nice! I'd love to get these on DVD and be able to actually show them to other people (i.e. have legal subtitles, haha).

This is probably wishful thinking, but I'm hoping for a wide-spread release - at least wide enough to hit cities on the East Coast other than NYC and DC...

Hadn't watch these yet. Guess I'll delete them from my hard drive. I am really glad though. Seems like more and more the live actions are being brought over with the anime. It's a trend I hope continues (NANA and Honey and Clover Viz!).

I must get around to checking this out, especially since I know that they cover the part of the series I really enjoyed but not so much the parts I didn't. I haven't watched them yet though because the idea of seeing Light played by a real person rather scares me.

Yeah, I'm glad it's coming out over here. Viz Pictures is definitely going to be interesting to watch in the coming years, I think.

I thought H&C already was, but I guess I'm wrong. I'm also selfish, as I'd rather not see it get licensed anytime soon. Why? My husband bought me the R2 (which is actually subbed in English) for Valentine's Day, so I'd feel silly if he did that at my bidding only for a much cheaper and versatile (aka playable in an R1 DVD setup) came available...especially since I still haven't gotten around to watching it in the first place.

I'm more afraid of seeing L played by a real person. That crouched, barefoot look of his creeped me out badly enough in a drawn format, I'm afraid to see what it would look like in real life (or even in the animated version.)

Still, these will most certainly go into the Netflix queue once they're available on DVD.

With all the noise these films have been making at various film festivals, it was a pretty decent chance of their being picked up. I was just wondering who would be doing it. Viz is a better shot at a dub while MB would have been morelikely subtitled only, but we could have even seen one of the outside players (Columbia, Sony) pick it up.
So it's nice to finally have a chance to see them. One of the shops that sells bootlegs locally was playing it a few times when I was in there & I was actually impressed with Rem's portrayal given the usual level of special effects in Japanese horror movies (yeah, 80% of my experience is probably the stuff from MB)

Interesting. I thought I had heard something about Warner Brothers having the rights before. Was that just hearsay?

Anyway, I have had the R3 Death Note import for about a year now, and it is awesome. It has English subtitles too.

IF they decide to dub the DVD release, I wonder if they will use the same actors that they are using for the anime release.

Any theater release I am fairly positive would be sub only, but the DVD/HD release it is not out of the question. Not that I really care, with live-action I almost always perfer subbed, but I also like a lot of options too.

I haven't seen this yet, but if there is a ton of long diatribes (like in GitS2), a well made dub might be welcome.

I haven't seen the anime either, just read the manga. For those of you who have, is there a lot of long quickly spoken speeches?

I felt all the actors/actresses played their parts pretty well, especially L and Chief Yagami. I've only seen the first movie, but aside from some writing issues (plot elements being rearranged/added/altered), it's an otherwise good adaptation of the franchise, I would say. I also wish the music was as epic as Yoshihisa Hirano's score in the anime, but Kenji Kawai has always been a great and consistent composer himself.

Warner Bros. was the production company behind it... apparently none of the non-Japanese Warner Bros. divisions picked it up. So you should still see the Warner Bros. logo before the movie starts when they release it. (It gave me so much hope when I saw both of them at a filmfest, that Warner Bros. in the States would pick it up. Argh. What a horrible tease.)

Neither of them compare to the horror that is CGI Ryuk. Laughing

Live-action L is almost endearing ... I think they play him off more as a quirky character than a creepy weirdo.
