It will be very interesting to see how Funimation's dub is recieved and what effect it will have on DVD sales and other merchandise. If it has a significantly positive impact, improving sales enough to justify the switch to Funi, then it may encourage others to re-dub or just plain dub earlier releases with severe flaws.

Plus, if the uncut significantly beats the cut, it could add to the evidence that editing/censoring is really stupid. (Not that many aside from 4kids do this with anime, but it could lead to some previously released series getting a nice redone release.)

If nothing else, this will be a test of whether or not fans who previously have refused to buy a product because of edits/bad dub will actually put their money where their mouth is and pony up for the uncut/better dub. If the audience remains content to stick with fansubs forever, this could really hurt Funimation. If they start buying in droves, it might help to secure Funimation's power player position in the R1 anime industry for years to come. (One Piece is a freaking long anime.)

No matter what, this is going to be an important matter to follow.

Bandai's also bringing over Unlimited Adventure next year so we'll get samples of a bunch of past and future characters that won't be appearing in the Funi dub for quite some time.

So from what I gather, the Cartoon Network version is still going to have to do some of the edits. I wonder exactly which ones? Will they include all the original OPs and EDs and musical score? Will they undo most, if not all the 4kids edits? Or am I just going to have to buy the uncut box sets for all of that? Wink Still a few questions I have about this one.

Buy the uncut box sets definitely...

It's like watching a whole different series - it really is...

I almost puked when I heard the 4Kids dubs...

The last I heard, the OP is supposed to be a dubbed version of the original OP (so I'm assuming, since this is the start of Jaya/Skypiea, that means a translated version of Hikari E).

The original musical score in the episode is supposed to be completely intact in the FUNi dub.

Apparently a lot of what they're doing with the show is being dictated either by Toei in Japan or by CN for the broadcast version.

I believe Sanji is still supposed to have his lollipop for the Cartoon Network version, and supposedly some of the violence will be edited. I remember them saying something like CN won't allow them to show Luffy actually land a punch unless there's a flash of light or some nonsense like that. I also believe they're apparently being forced to keep Zoro as "Zolo" in the dub but are using "Zoro" in the subs, if I remember right. It does, however, look like Ace is going to be Ace again, so that will be good if true.

And we already have the first FUNi dub episode title, and it's a more or less exact translation of the proper Japanese title for the episode, so no more awful awful puns there. It also means they're ditching 4Kids' "Grand Compass" nonsense, since the episode title contains a direct reference to the Log Pose.

The new One Piece dub starts on Toonami in just about a week and a half (Sept. 29), so the long awaited death of 4Kids' One Piece is finally upon us.

Probably, the best bet is to stay away from the CN broadcast version. And just buy the uncut version to avoid unnessary edits from CN. But I got a question why do not Cartoon Network move it to Adult Swim. So,to limit the edits for the show.

Last I heard Smoker and Ace are staying Trace and Chaser in the TV edit as well. They'll stay Ace and Smoker on the uncut DVD and all merchandise like the upcoming video game.

Last I heard, Funi said that they were shooting for the same editing standards that Naruto currently enjoys. While they'll probably still leave some things from the 4Kids version for continuity reasons (Sanji's lollipop), I'm hoping that means they now know and understand what they can get away with and won't have to deal with that "flash of light during a punch" idiocy. Yes, some violence will be toned down, but if they can get away with what Naruto gets away with, people should have very little reason to complain.

I know that's what FUNi said they WANTED to do, but the last I heard was that CN is not giving them the same considerations that Naruto gets.

I would like to be wrong, though.

I really really really really really hope that the unedited DVDs are both made well and sell well. Particularly since there's a few other shows with edited dubs that I would like to see uncut Japanese subs released on DVD for. (Particularly Digimon. It's not that it had a particularly bad dub, but that was one of the anime that got me into anime fandom, and I'd reeeeally like to own the full series on DVD--and I'd love to see what the original was like without some of the Americanized humor and edits...even if I actually found some of the American-inserted jokes quite funny.)

Historically, this has not been the case. The uncut, subtitled editions of Yugioh and Shaman King were both canceled a few volumes in due to low sales.

Obviously a show as popular as Naruto can sustain sales numbers high enough to support the continued release of uncut box sets, but One Piece has never been as popular here. We'll have to see what happens.

I've barely seen One Pice dub version episodes showed on FoxKids, but I did see alot of fansub versions. I stopped watching it because there is just too many episodes for me to keep up and I'm already watching Naruto Shippuden.

I've heard all this talk about how 4Kids really messed up One Piece. Few examples like Sanji having a lolipop or a flash of light occuring @ the same time luffy punches someone doesn't really strike me as it being really bad. So how bad was the dub version? On a scale of 1 -10, was it worse than the CardCaptors dubbing?

Cartoon Network does very little editing themselves. Most editing is done by the studios--CN shows whatever Funi/4Kids/whoever gives them and only mildly cleaned up from there. They don't have the necessary staff for heavy edits.

Don't forget: the current One Piece dub is a result of the show first going to NETWORK television, not cable. The fans of that network broadcast are the audience that CN had to try holding onto as dictated on high by their overlords at Time-Warner.

Hopefully that will change eventually, but it won't go too far as long as CN continues to market these shows to the tweens they were written for in the first place.
