Oh hey, Ikki! They even got the Phoenix tails! Oh though I guess he's Nero in this?

Also is Famke taking the place of that general guy from the Netflix adaption?

This has to be the prettiest movie I've ever felt sorry for.

No, seriously. Sony just put this movie on a collision course against The Super Mario Bros. Movie in Japan. What does Sony hope to accomplish with this?

Toei's handling the Japanese release themselves.

Odds are it's going to bomb there regardless of the release date. The franchise doesn't seem to be very popular in Japan anymore. All of the anime post-Omega has gone direct-to-streaming, while TV airings remain the norm for all of Toei's other big IPs. The second season of the CG show launched internationally first, with its Japanese release only coming in January. Legend of Sanctuary also did poorly there, only grossing a little over $2 million.

The main markets for this are going to be Latin America, Southern Europe and maybe China.

Toei's also handling the Chinese release while everyone else is under Sony.

What are Sony’s plans for the movie? A worldwide theatrical release or a hybrid home entertainment debut, including some online-only territories?

We can’t give a specific answer, but they’re hinting at global theatrical, especially outside of the U.S. The question really is ‘what are they going to do in English speaking territories?’ So far, they are saying very positive things.

Toei Animation controls the rights in Japan and China. Sony is there for the rest of the world. In their territories, distribution and marketing will be their expense.
