Onimai is THE definition of "waste of talent".

Considering the negative impressions I saw from other ANN writers with the winter 2023 guide, this high rating comes off as a surprise. Very Happy

It is significant that the story only begins after the transition, and we never get a direct look at Mahiro's previous appearance.

This is the same approach the old webcomic Misfile took, but that one played it very differently. There, the protagonist Ash -- who Woke Up As A Girl™ due to a pothead angel accidentally putting his file in the wrong drawer, and who nobody remembers being otherwise -- is unambiguously treated as a trans guy, and very badly wants to get the misfile corrected. So he never becomes comfortable wearing dresses and such, unlike in Onimai, where much of the comic tension comes from Mahiro being drawn to the ~forbidden decadence of femininity~. IIRC, there was an in-character Q&A column on the Misfile site where Ash concedes that a lot of his life is materially better now -- closer relationships with both his parents, and so on -- but says he'd give it all up in a heartbeat to feel like himself again.

Kim's a fan of both Mushoku Tensei and Eromanga-sensei. Her liking this much more than most of ANN's reviewers was the least surprising response imaginable.

Okay, guys, hear me out: Onimai is the best anime of the season.

I know bait when I see it. I'm not falling for that. Wink

Not gonna lie, I voted for this because I wanted funny reviews of a trainwreck, but, if the reviewer likes it, good for her.

That was a nostalgic blast from the past, a past when I was reading much more comics than manga. I need to resume this webcomic and see how it ended (if it even did), it was quite nice and got nice theme with the car racing thing.

Honestly rather relieved at this reception.

Look, I'm a big fan of the manga. But I was very leery of the anime to start with because of the inevitable emphasis on those first chapters — before the extended cast is established — where there's more of a focus on the, well, physical side of Mahiro's transformation. I remember expressing, a few months ago, the wish that they'd kind of go fast through the initial arc, but the bits I'd seen so far hadn't given me much hope.

Misfile ended a few years ago, but he started a spin-off comic (Misfile Hell High)

Lol. The reviewer has self-published little sister LN. She is genuine with her review. Also, from the shows I'm watching, Onimai is unironically the best this season.

This is the definition of sour graping. Its kinda insulting to the people who genuinely enjoy working on the show to call working on Onimai a "waste of talent".

Legit the biggest surprise of the season for me. Never would have thought I'd come out of watching episode 1 willing to actually defend the series (to an extent) rather than jeer at it.

Glad to see this being reviewed and by someone who genuinely likes the show. I love the manga, and the anime is so far absolutely gorgeous in its animation and general presentation. Wasn't sure how I'd feel about the fanservice, but I've grown to accept it.

Definitely the show I'm looking forward to the most each week this season!

When this started airing, I searched all the drawers of my home looking for a monkey paw. I must have just missed it, because one MUST exist.

An adaptation of one the cutest most positive manga I'm following? And it has godly animation? Hell yeah! But wait, why did they crank up the lewdness dial from 1 to 100? And why is all the great animation going there?
So anyway I'm stopping watching now. And honestly what I'm most upset about is Kaede. That design destroys the vibe she's supposed to give.
