Tbh I'm surprised that NYAV post isn't dubbing this one, especially since they've done so many of Shinkai's works.

A little disappointed tbh, but seeing Rosalie Chaing moving from Turning Red to another anime is cool. I also see some other fresh faces in the mix. Never heard of Nichole but her name sounds like a cool pen name

Oho, so they can afford a union dub sometimes? Bummed they’d go to the trouble of sending this to LA but not get NYAV to handle it.

Pretty strong cast! Someone of actual Japanese descent playing the lead. And Rosalie Chiang. And Josh Keaton!!!

Lot of names in this that we don't hear as much. I'm actually kind of surprised this is a primarily LA dub.

Personally fine with this going to Bang Zoom. Love NYAV Post, but neither of their dubs for Your Name and Weathering With You really worked for me, the latter especially so. Plus it's something different, similar to how Hosoda's films have been spread out across dub studios over time. Don't really have strong opinions on Bill Millsap as a director, but I did really enjoy his work on Odd Taxi.

This being a union dub is interesting but there's plenty of reasons that make a lot of sense: Simply not wanting to flip after the director's last two films were union, could help (or at the very least not cause any potential issues) during awards campaigning down the line, the film could have returning cameos much like Weathering did and thus need to bring back SAG-AFTRA actors, etc...

While it seems to be strictly LA-only, it still looks to be an interesting cast with voice actors who all specialize in different areas of the VO industry beyond anime - which is always a neat aspect to bring to the table.

This cast looks surprisingly strong on paper, especially getting Josh Keaton for this film. I do wonder how it'll be executed so I'm looking forward to seeing how the english dub watchers react to the final product.

.

Although Crunchyroll is responsible for North American distribution (which runs its distribution separately from Sony Pictures) and generally does not have Union contracts to affect their dubs, Sony Pictures is directly involved in the distribution of other English speaking territories (UK, Australia, NZ).

It’s likely Sony Pictures’ participation (along with Wild Bunch and Eurozoom) likely required a Union dub in accordance with any union contracts Sony Pictures has for theatrical releases.

It should be interesting to see if Sony Pictures and Crunchyroll jointly distribute future major anime films now that Crunchyroll gives Sony greater access as a brand to the global anime market outside of Asia.

I don't know if that was the way the film got a union dub. Sony Pictures distributed Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero last year outside NA and Japan, but that didn't lead to the project going union like this one did.

I hear ya and think that's all fair yeah. Though personally I loved NYAV's dub for Your Name, especially when you hear the story behind it aha. It really was just a complete passion project for Michael Sinterniklaas and Stephanie Sheh, and that shines through in the best way in my opinion. Their Weathering With You dub I was a little more mixed on, but I was more mixed on that film as a whole so I'm not sure I'd blame the dub entirely for that.

But yeah like you said, awesome to be getting something different anyway, and the lineup here looks damn good.
