Somebody in the thread about the the RE movie mentioned that the virus that was suppressed in Jill is why she aged differently. But what gets me is that other characters are using models from the movies, but Jill is her in-game model. I don't care much if they use one or the other, but using both looks weird.

I suppose we should have seen the MTX in RE4 coming. I thought it was clever that spinels went from this thing that was barely worth anything to a hot commodity by adding that trade-in part of the shop, but it was just the mobile game premium currency in disguise. And, of course, they pulled the move of doing that with an update after the glowing reviews are out there. It seems especially dumb since it's a fantastic game with basically universal praise. It didn't need this to make money, but I suppose letting some mud splash on an otherwise sterling reputation is worth it if a company can find a few extra bucks.

Remember Castle of Shikagami 2 and its horrible localization on PS2? Well, it's now out on Nintendo's eShop, and it has a good localization now!

And the world is a sadder place because of that. Make no mistake, I absolutely love Shikigami 2 from a gameplay & presentation perspective, but it's a downright shame that the original translation & English dub by XS Games is left to be only available on the PS2 (& PS3, as a PS2 Classic, until Sony actually pulls the plug on the PS Store over there), because it's so utterly charming in its adherence to being a true-blue "literal translation".

I think Degica, the company that did the new translation for Shikigami 1 & 2, did state that they would look into if they could possibly include the OG translation & dub for Shikigami 2 at some point as DLC or an update, but considering that it hasn't happened yet I imagine it's stuck in licensing limbo. It's likely that XS' translation & dub didn't automatically revert back to Alfa System once the license expired, and since XS Games has pretty much been dead for at least a decade or so, who knows who actually owns the rights to that glorious OG translation & dub.

The fights between Eikons are big and bombastic, but the rest of the combat seems to be just a simplified take on Devil May Cry. And I don't know if you know this, but... you can play Devil May Cry. Like, right now, even. And it's really good! Heck, you can even play Bayonetta. I'm not sure how much Final Fantasy fans want their RPG series to become a character action game series, and I'm not sure how much a character action game take on Final Fantasy will appeal to your average Joe Gamer.

Thank you, I was thinking the same thing. Especially considering I finally decided to pick up and finish DMC5 the other week, all I could think of is "man this really wants to be DMC but with more particle effects".

The most distracting thing for me is that what I'm seeing FFXVI doesn't look bad but it looks like a lot of AAA Western games I've seen before, with the exception of the combat as said and the Eikon fights. You said it reminded you of something from a decade ago, I agree. In fact, I was directly thinking of Asura's Wrath or the big QTE setpieces in the original God of War, except bigger. Ultimately, I feel like even with this State of Play, this hasn't really penetrated global saturation the same way something like Elden Ring or Zelda with their showcases did and that's my main wonder. Is this audience Square is chasing going to truly show up in the way they want?

-RE4R: What gets me about the microtransaction nonsense is that it's just the latest in CAPCOM trying and failing to bolt on multiplayer or monetization onto Resident Evil. It doesn't work, it has never worked, and it never will. It doesn't work for the series, give it up.

-TotK: Since TotK is a throwback to a lot of Skyward Sword stuff, one thing that they emphasized in Skyward Sword was that Zelda was going through her own journey offscreen. But in this, they emphasize that Zelda is going to be active in the story, the question is how. Nintendo always plays coy with their games so it's clearly they're still hiding a lot about TotK.

As for the stuff we do know, it's interesting how the new Champions clearly take a more active role in the game with fighting alongside Link. My guess is he won't have access to the previous magic from BOTW so they're in it as a substitute. Though I'm also wondering why Teba is absent and substituted with his son Tulin, which also makes it clear some time has passed since BOTW.

Looking forward to discovery its mysteries and hearing Matt ham it up as Ganondorf, which is a very different role for him.

-FFXVI: To be honest, FFXVI finally just biting the bullet and going into action RPG is long overdue. Starting with XII, the series kept flirting with real-time systems but couldn't really commit to them whether through sloppiness or squeamishness. XII's pseudo-MMO was lackluster and clumsy (mostly because they forgot that most MMOs realize that attack shouldn't even be a command it's so basic) and pales in comparison to Xenoblade's more streamlined system, XV wanted to emulate stylish action games, but couldn't commit or understand them, and VII Remake's system again tried to have its both ways but doesn't excel at either. The team committing with "Look, this is the system, we've made accessibility options, so take it or leave it" instead of trying to please everyyone is rather refreshing. And going the full medieval fantasy route is ironically unique for the franchise (remember, even in FF1 there was heavy sci-fi stuff like the Warmech). We'll see how it goes, but everything I've seen looks great

As a pretty dedicated rpg player, yeah FF 16 isn't looking as interesting as I would like. Heavy on the action game, which is dandy but not so FF. Very much an experience that could be fine, but not for me. Having said that...I'm willing to be convinced otherwise when the game releases. I don't think anything prerelease is going to- too much dressed up to generate attention.

I'm completely sold on XVI. Everything looks great from the world, to the music, the action combat. I can somewhat understand the cynicism, even if I don't agree with it. Like, there are plenty of videos from the media tour and Pax-East panel that show the game isn't just "Simplified DMC". Of course there are similarities because developers from 5 are on this game, but plenty of mechanics that offer a different experience.

I think the oddest one is the yellow orbs in Devil May Cry 5. Those orbs let you revive during a fight, and were very rare items in prior games. They became daily login bonuses for a game with finite content.

Between that and Doctor Faust, it's like the team knew they would be forced to put in monetization and decided "Okay, how do we make it as useless as possible?" I can't recall a single player buying anything; maybe the unlocks for the Super versions of characters but that's it. It's really amusing how pointless it was.

It's just ATB but with the ability to move around. It has nothing to do with MMOs at all. How are there people 17 years later who still do not understand this, legitimately embarrassing.

It's quite literally a single-player version of Final Fantasy XI's battle system. Which is both the preceding numbered entry in the franchise and an MMO you've clearly never played.

XI is Real Time Battle. XII is Active Dimension Battle (because it's just Active Time Battle but with three-dimensional movement). They were designed by different people and play entirely differently. Which you would know if you actually played the games and didn't just regurgitate garbage you've heard other people say. But I guess that's too much to expect from a franchise known for attracting people who can't read or form coherent thoughts on their own.

I understand it perfectly, but it's an MMO system no matter how you slice it and the ATB system...isn't fit for that. It creates a clunky mash that just doesn't gel, so either you're micromanaging or letting the game play on autopilot which just boring or irritating. Xenoblade did it far better by letting attacks play out on their own and streamlining all the gunk because it clearly understood MMO design better.

Do not understand the mentality of "you could just play devil.may cry"

Like...yeah. I did. I want to play this too. It's as dismissive as if this game was turn based and going "you u could just play octopath traveller 2 instead"

It's not Ganon (that's his monster pig or blight form) it's Ganondorf which is his Gerudo/normal form.

Yeah. Why play Pokemon when you can play Persona? For some reason XVI has brought a lot of weird takes. Even the idea the setting is "westernized" is strange. As if FF has never had a setting like this in the older games or Tactics.
