They have the death penalty there and this case sounds like a strong contender for it.

I'd rather them not. There are fates worse than death, which he's already in right now (with his self-inflicted burn scars and the knowledge he couldn't destroy KyoAni for good); giving him the easy way out would be a mercy.

Death penalty, this isn't a place like Peru where prison is a fate worse than death. He killed people over a light novel rejection, leaving him alive will bring out the copycats.

He'll most likely get the death penalty considering that his actions caused the deaths of 36 people, 7 more than those that were killed by attacks by the religious cult, Aum Shinrikyo. 13 members of the cult were executed in July of 2018 for those attacks. I can't imagine that Aoba would get anything less than the death penalty considering that he single-handedly caused the deaths of that many people.

I imagine he'll hang. In a less civilized society than modern Japan and the West an arsonist would probably be burned at the stake, not that I'm advocating for such barbarism. Hanging will be sufficient, but if he gets life in prison that also works.

As if that'll stop them. These people crave fame, even at the expense of their own life. Some people even commit murder exactly so they'll get hanged (or get killed by a cop), as they cannot do it to themselves. Him rotting in jail woud be a fitting punishment, as he would be denied of what he wants and it would be a warning to others as well. And don't even mention Peru, that system is as much brutal as ineffective (and corrupt) it is.

He probably intended to die at the scene, like most mass-murderers. Executing him won't bring anyone back to life, and if it's anything like the US, it'll likely take more than a decade for them to get around to doing it. Either way, he's certainly never getting out of prison.
Also, I hope they haven't forgotten that dangerous building design was part of the problem... I recall there was a serious lack of fire exits. It shouldn't be that easy for one guy with a can of gasoline to kill over 30 people. Even an accidental fire in that place would have probably caused fatalities.

In Japan? I'd argue life in prison is worse than death. They typically have short sentences (compared to the US) and every time somethings comes out in the news about it, it just comes out as inhumane torture, even for the worst of criminals. That said, I still suspect this will be a death penalty case, as is the standard for this kind of thing.
