The main appeal of this series is the two-sided setting and the two-faced characters, especially the protagonist. We see the act Hime puts on in school for her classmates while we hear what she really thinks, and learn a little about why she acts this way. Then we see her at try her act at Cafe Liebe, but here, all the servers are acting, and everyone knows it. Though she had always maintained a public persona separate from her real self, the line between real and pretend gets blurred. The shifts in art and lighting, and the voice acting by Yui Ogura, is great at portraying both sides of Hime.
I don't usually watch yuri romance, but this series easily passed the three-episode test, and I'm looking forward to more. |

I read a few chapters of this years ago and had low expectations, but came a way feeling that it had potential. I'm glad to see it in anime form.

Sorry, but I just could not get into this. I mostly just felt sorry for Hime, who basically gets blackmailed into working at a cafe, isn't told any of the rules for how she's supposed to act, and then gets yelled at by everyone around her EVEN THOUGH SHE WOULDN'T HAVE MESSED UP IF THEY JUST EXPLAINED EVERYTHING TO HER FROM THE FIRST DAY!!!!! This is the equivalent of yanking someone off the streets, throwing them into a classy party, refusing to teach them things like proper etiquette or dress codes, and then chastising them for not somehow magically knowing the rules. The whole thing just felt really mean-spirited, and it honestly brought back some bad memories of other people pulling this stuff on me back in my elementary/middle school days. So I'm skipping this one.

I ahve been waiting for years for the manga to get an anime. I am so loving this anime. I am a big fan of the manga and Hime is my favorite. Keep watching becuase we have only scratch the surface of all the drama that is going to happen

As someone who's read the source material, I really encourage giving the series a little bit more of a shot; volume 2 (so episodes 4-6 at this pacing) is where the series (mild direction spoilers) spoiler[starts revealing its hand, addressing your concerns, and begins transforming the series into a monstrously good and complicated queer drama, imo]. And honestly, I probably would've dropped the series as well if it continued being like volume 1, so I understand why that first volume material comes off unpleasant (though necessary for later). (Also, first post! Hopefully it was alright.) |

What's funny is that we're introduced to Hime as haughty in the first episode so everything that happened in the cafe acts like a comeuppance against her. Granted as the next few episode comes, there's a lot more than meets than eye, and we're only hitting the tip of the iceberg on what's the deal with Mitsuki and everything else for that matter. |

It's easy to see how you come away with this feeling, but the only one who beats up on Hime is Mitsuki, to everyone else she's just a beginner who they figure will eventually learn the ropes. Slacker-sempai even comes to Hime's defense a few times, and probably wonders what Mitsuki's problem is. At the end of the third episode, we find out that Mitsuki and Hime have a prior history, which may explain her instant antagonism to the newbie. One interesting thing about this series is that it is two simultaneous yuri soap-operas: the simulated soap-opera going on in the cafe, and then the real soap-opera going on among the cafe staff (present, and, in later volumes of the manga, past). |

My initial thoughts on Watayuri: it's good. First episode was well-done, 8/10. Second was a little more on the frustrating side, especially near the end, getting to the point where I actually agree with the opinions held by those like FireChick, 6/10. Third salvaged it beautifully, and I can't wait for the next one, 9/10.

Really good breakdown of episode 4. I love the exploration of social interactions and interpersonal relationships, which is what this series is really about.

Reading the excellent episode 4 analysis made me rethink the episode and Mitsuki's actions and it did make me wonder if she's a bit ND.

Episode 4 flipped what I thought I'd learned about Hime and Mitsuki upside-down. The first three episodes presented Hime as a two-faced liar doing whatever it took to maintain a perfect angel facade, and Mitsuki as someone who saw through her bullshit and called her out on it. In this episode, we see that Hime really thought of Mitsuki as a friend and tried to protect her using her facade, but poor communication lead to a misunderstanding by Mitsuki, who, thinking she was being played for a fool like everyone else, lashed out and exposed Hime's secret.
What a mess. Can't wait to see what happens next. |

After what I've seen in episode 4, I'm pretty much all in on this. It's quite fascinating to see a complex mess of emotions being displayed here between Hime and Mitsuki. And with this being on Yuri Hime, we can assure they will get together romantically, but the journey towards that is probably going to be the roughest I've seen.
So far, the peeps at Passione and Studio LINGS are doing a good job navigating through those weeds. Yeah, it doesn't have the visual flair from say Dogakobo's take on Oshi no Ko, but just the fact Yuri is My Job is animated and voiced does help us distinguish when the girls are play acting or not. |

The one thing I could fault young Hime with is not realizing how bamboozled and upset Yano would be knowing how straightforward and unsubtle she is, that is something she should have been able to read. In the end their fallout is born of misunderstandings and a lack of communication, but I can cut literal elementary schoolers some slack, it's more reasonable for them to end up like this than it is for people 5~10 years their seniors.
Anyway good job pointing out Yano's low EQ. This won't be the last time it's relevant. |

I really loved the review that Richard Eisenbeis has done. He explains really well, I have been reading the manga for years now and it has been one of my favorite manga. Seeing it animated is really a treat and helps me so much to picture whats going on. Thanks for the excellent reviews
