I’ll agree with all but the art comment: I find the art style rather unique and beautifully fun to look at. It’s what drew me in to watch. Glad it did. This show has been excellent in every way.

Same. Umeshita's designs have this really "soft" feel, and it makes the anime feel more enjoyable to watch.

This seemed like a super sweet show from the get-go and definitely one of my most anticipated for Spring! Haven't read the manga for it, but I've heard good things, and the first couple episodes didn't disappoint.
And yeah, I agree completely with what others here have said about the art style, but tbf I'm assuming she's just talking about the blush placement being a bit lower on the face rather than the overall understated, softer aesthetic of the show. |

This is a really charming series; I've heard good things about the manga and I'm enjoying the anime so far. I know it technically isn't shoujo since the manga runs in a seinen magazine, but it's definitely scratching my itch for more shoujo-style anime lately.

Not only is the show a visual treat (which is to be expected coming from PA Works) but it feels like a very sincere and genuine youth drama, with characters that feel like real, quirky, teenagers interacting with each other in cute and endearing ways and the relationships that unfold as a result.

Exactly! They’re so genuine. It’s SO endearing. When Mitsumi took her first sip of boba, and they cut to the baby duck taking it’s first swim—well, my small heart grew three sizes today.

I'll agree the red cheek are a bit too far, softer tone would work better. They might have been worried people wouldn't catch it, but the writing is strong enough to work without them.
I'm just in awe at how normal everyone feel, nobody is some cartoonish character with their tropes pushed really far, everyone feel like rounded character, they have more character traits in 3 episodes than some main character do in entire season. And more than that, they're all nice people and that's so rare, the drama instead come from them navigating regular life. |

It feels to me that the main theme so far is "don't judge by appearances" Even though Mitsumi IS exactly who she presents herself as, basically all of the other characters are much more than you think at first glance |

Superb adaptation, well not much to be tweaked since the source material is really great by itself. The worst that could happen is some studio messed up a good chance. But PA Works did their usual thing which is delivering constant quality animation. They even copy the mood and color of the manga, however, I wish they could've livened the color a little bit.
BTW I really appreciate the review. Made me realize the teeny itty bits detail why I love the manga so much. |

This show is real cute, I love me a bit of disaster dorks being adorable. Mitsumi's more or less complete lack of self awareness could be really irritating, but it's just really endearing. Similarly Shima done wrong could easily be a potato or a kind of laid back manic pixie, but he's clearly got more going on than that. His low key, seemingly effortless, support of Mitsumi is just really.... nice. The whole show has such a gentle vibe, and the supporting cast seem interesting and believable. Definitely in the watch list this season.

Execution is everything. "Studious country mouse meets lazy handsome city boy" sounds like such a non-premise, but somehow both the leads and the rest of the cast all feel realistic and endearing and unique, often goofy or awkward but never in a mean-spirited way, and the plot plays out naturally and also exactly how it ought to. It's like the Platonic ideal of soft and silly high-school shenanigans.
People having hidden depths does seem like a running theme, as well as opposites. Besides the main couple, Egashira goes out of her way to get noticed (by Shima in particular), while Yuzuki as the "pretty and popular" one ironically feels isolated because she sort of intimidates people, and ends up making friends with Kurume, the class nerd who usually resents people like her but also wants to try out a different perspective. There's sort of a meta aspect to it, too, since Shima apparently has an unpleasant history with some kind of performing arts, so he enjoys spending time with Mitsumi and her friends because they're the exact opposite of that--both literally real and very genuine. We'll have to see how it plays out when he inevitably has to confront that part of his past; that drama club guy doesn't seem to have any intention of leaving him alone. |

I feel like out of all the new adaptations this season, Skip's source material has enjoyed one of the best treatments (only second to Heavenly Delusion, perhaps). The manga is excellently written, but the way P.A. Works animates it breathes life in every scene, giving it much-needed directorial touch, which was plenty evident already at that wonderfully handled running scene in the first episode. It is a complete feel-good package.
