I was floored by the last DVD in this series. As soon as I finished this DVD I as Theron suggested watched the last episode over again. This volume has won me over and I consider this series as well plotted as last years Gankutsuou which also had an amazing and dense ending. Although I lost a bit of interest in the middle volumes this series ends very strongly.

Same here. The final two volumes of this series were an utterly fantastic experience. The cliffhanger at the end of volume 5 had me itching for more Chevalier during the two-month wait for volume 6. A wait that was well worth it. The final four episodes totally delivered, cementing this series as my favorite of 2007 and also as one of my all time favorites. Currently it is second only to Gankutsuou.

Just curious, after your second viewing, were you able to figure out how two characters were switched as children even though one is at least 20-30 years older than the other?

I certainly missed how they explain that away.

I didn't find this even close to being as good as Gankutsuou. Gankutsuou had very interesting fully developed characters - Chevalier's characters were neither.

Many of the middle episodes were an absolute chore to watch. IMO this was a mediocre show at best.

I thought Chevalier was a very strong series. With this volume all the ends are finally tied up. Although I wouldn't call it simplistic, as Theron suggested, I would call it compact. If by that he means it is all brought to a close very quickly. Thing is I find this typical of almost all anime endings, so it was no surprise here. I say this a lot, but 5-7 more minutes tacked on to the end could have gone a long way on this one. Especially on this series but that is true with many others as well in my opinion.

Like many great tales, this one is ultimately a tragedy. Told in a fable-esque fashion, the history aspect for me fleshed out the setting moreso than the characters. The characters did a good job all on there own with that aspect, in my opinion. I must say that the human aspect was brought out very well in the way the lead delt with the many spoiler[betrayals]. I felt that this was very realistic, and one of my many favorite aspects.

I agree with the review, and this is certainly one of the shinning stars of 2007. Thanks ADV. Smile

Oh yay so it IS actually a puzzling fact present in the series (rather than just me being too dense to figure out stuff Smile ). I was VERY confused by their age difference as well and I've watched the last episode 'round 3-4 times already. I'm pretty sure I haven't missed out any important bits.

This show's quality did sag a bit in the middle but overall it's still one of the better ones from last year. The sheer amount of research the creators must have done and the historical details in the art are commendable, to say the least.

CN Australia was nice enough to air Le Chevalier on Adult Swim, so until the last couple of DVDs are released here I can at least satisfy my cravings with crappy VHS-quality recordings (and I'm glad I did record the last episode. I sincerely applaud anyone who gets everything just by watching it through once).
