I hope they do it justice and don't try to get too creative or take too much liberty. That aside, a $100 Million budget looks pretty awesome.

The fact that Leiji Matsumoto wasn't mentioned makes me a little worried about this, Harlock is my favorite character ever so, I'd hate it if they just use the name to make some crap :S

This is one of the few times when I want a Caucasian as the lead in one of these Anime-to-Live-Action movies, and it probably won't happen this time.
I remember hearing that the French were going to make a Harlock movie, but I guess that never happened. |

I agree with you there. Space Pirate Captain Harlock is one of my all time favorite anime. And I would hate to see it get a bad reputation due to a crappy live action film. I just hope that they will stay loyal to the original story line!!!

Some years ago, another Harlock live-action movie was planned with a similar budget, and was supposed to be directed by Christophe Gans (Crying Freeman, Brotherwood of the Wolf), co-produced by French-channel Canal+ and a Hollywood major with Joe Hisaishi as score composer and an American cast (film produced in English obviously). I wonder what has happened to this project, I guess it failed in the process, but it's too bad since I really wanted to see the actual movie on screen.
This Korean project is quite huge too and it could be good, but let's wait until Leiji Matsumoto agrees to it before rejoicing over a potential adaptation. |

I personally lost any interest in Matsumoto's "approval" on the works derived from his ideas since he butchered Murai's version of Endless Odissey.

I certainly hope this is not the case, but the bitter reality is that in many cases the original creator of an artistic work no longer owns all of the rights to that work. When Nike first used the song "Revolution" in a commercial back in the '80s, the surviving Beatles and their fans were up in arms. But the Beatles - the original creators of the work - had no say in the matter. The legal rights to a large portion of their catalog had been purchased by Michael Jackson, who in turn licensed the use of "Revolution" to Nike. This is a well known example, but this sort of thing is not at all uncommon. It is entirely possible that Leiji Matsumoto unwittingly signed away some or all rights because of some obscure bit of fine print in a contract signed years earlier. |

And if he doesn't have the rights, then he probably shouldn't expect to be asked for permission.

Well if he could do that, then it's probable that he still retains some kind of ownership. Also, he did that because Murai decided to use the Star of David for the demonic aliens 
Even if he doesn't have the rights, it would be a professional courtesy to ask him on his opinion. He spent years creating the character and the mythos behind it, it's one of the very few anime characters that after 30 years is still very fresh in the minds of the fans, so at least, he deserves to know about how his creations will be exploited. |

Reminds me of how "Kung Fu Dunk" was gonna be the Chinese Slam Dunk movie before they changed it. Methinks that the Korean company will follow soon enough.

Still, I'd have liked to see that, especially since I think Murai is a far better screenplayer than him (having seen Harlock, Yamato, and assorted works, including Danguard Ace - both versions) so I was curious to see his take. Not to mention his struggle with the rights of Yamato, so I have my doubts if he really wants to "stop it" because he wasn't informed. |

I don't like the idea of anime or Manga being adapted into live actions ! i hope he rejects the project and it gets canceled
