I can see the point behind the film, but I think it might have been a better idea to mimic the process of the poetry rather than the poetry itself. So have one animator create a short, then have another watch the short and create their own in response. This would create something far more relevant to a modern audience, instead of trying to interpret both psychology and archaic mindset/situation.
And it's something I'd rather like to see. |

They need to do more anthology anime movies. I don't believe Gotham Knight would really count though.

The pictures really don't evoke the little Basho I have read, but a few of them are stunning, all right.

Winter Days is a difficult title to review so as an addon I found this review that provides a little more info.
http://www.midnighteye.com/reviews/winter-days.shtml if you do not regard Winter Days as an anime but rather as an animation movie, you'll enjoy it much more. By animation movie I mean something that goes further than the typical american or japanese animated movies. You will not find many movies where so many animators participate. I think some of them also helped in "The Book of the Dead". It is not for everyone and very few have seen it, I agree so it is not mainstream. |

Why not? I'm ready to count it and already include The Animatrix as well. Anthology titles are always fun to me since we're shown so many artists' takes on a given theme. I do wish more were released in the U.S. as at least two of my faves (Robot Carnival, The Cockpit) have yet to come to R1. I'd not heard of this anime before and do tend to like Takahata's work in general. Between this and the cultural / literary influences listed, it sounds like a fun title to research and track down some time. Thanks for the heads up, Justin. |

The point of the article is to introduce people to anime they might not have otherwise known about. Whether or not you appreciated it does not make it pointless. I found it interesting, but by no means did the article make me want to go out an see Winter Days, which is perfectly fine because I'm not the type of person who would enjoy the movie (and obviously,neither are you). Other people, with interests and tastes that differ from ours, might go and seek out Winter Days now that Justin has introduced them to it. That, my friend, was the point of the article. -t |

I feel very similar to Justin about Winter Days. I spend an awful lot of my time watching animated short films and worship the ground Yuri Norstein walks on so of course I enjoyed a lot about this film, but I can't see myself recommending it to most anime fans. It's more catered to an Annecy-type crowd (case in point: I saw this by borrowing the DVD from Igor Kovalyov, a short film director and festival participant with decidedly Eastern-European taste) and there's not a whole lot of substance beyond the animation itself, which is quite lovely in some cases. IMO, the two Russians, Norstein and Aleksandr Petrov, deliver the finest segments in terms of mood, tone, and overall skill. Petrov's paint on glass animation gives me goosebumps.
Just curious, have you ever seen Tale of Tales, Justin? |

As an animation major, this is something I'm really interested in seeing. Sure, it may not have an insanely good story, but it will probably be interesting to watch for the animation. If it's really only 40 minutes or so, that's not much different from watching things like O Canada and such that used to play on Cartoon Network. (CN used to play shows that had tons of animated shorts, O Canada obviously was shorts from Canada)

I never expected a review on art animation. Seriously, most anime fans tend to limit their viewing experience by allocating too much of their viewing time only on popular trendy titles. I think experiencing diverse genre makes us more rounded than becoming narrow minded viewer.
Winter Days may not be widely accepted animation for all viewers, but it represents a side of animation that people should aware of. Somehow this week's Anime News Nina goes concurrent with this article...or is it just me? |

Here's one that should go back to watching Rosario + Vampire. 
And by the way, just where can we get the Korean edition? YesAsia doesn't seems to carry it (and that's like the only website I know that sells Korean stuff) at any rate. |

Wow, I had actually completely forgotten I saw Fuyu no Hi while I was in Japan a few years ago.
As with most anthologies of art house animation, I seem to remember it being pretty hit or miss. I do seem to remember really enjoying the Russian contributions, though. Actually I also saw an exhibit of Yuri Norstein's work at the National Film Center in Tokyo around the same time. I hadn't ever heard of Yuri Norstein before both this movie and that exhibit, so it was all really quite interesting. |
