It's a shame that the publishers treat artists like that. I am glad that she quit. I would quit too if someone did something to me. She made a good choice to hire a lawyer to protect her work.

Wow. That's some pretty horrible news to hear from someone inside the industry. I guess the relationship Kishimoto Masashi outlines in the Naruto manga extras with his editor isn't exactly the norm.
EDIT- It's not the publishers. It's the individual editors assigned to work with the artists that are the problem. |

Yeah, but publishers can be a pain too. I work as an editor/proofreader for the Bible manga that was posted on this site last fall (it's a start), and our publisher (Tyndale) has WAY too much power over the direction that the project takes. Granted, Tyndale is not a manga publisher, so I doubt our situation is the norm, but whenever you have too many people working on a creative project, the results are always in danger.

I feel bad for some of these manga artists--especially the ones that are just starting out, since they are the most vunerable to this crap. I'm shocked that Mayu put up with it for so long. I would have had a nervous breakdown with that kind of pressure and schedule! |

I can't draw to save my life but figuring a 30 day month with no days off, that's 4 pages a day. 5.4 pages a day if you take Saturdays and Sundays (total of 8 days) off. That's an awful lot of drawing. I'd leave too if they wouldn't assign a new editor.

You know, this type of environment happened in the American comics industry as well... well... maybe a similar instance. The result of which, brought us Image Comics. Maybe it's time, and for the best interst, for some creators to break free and start a creator based company. It'd be interesting.

That is just well out of order. She should have sued them for mental cruelty and harassment as well. She would have won that one here, no mistake. Some men can be complete cupid stunts.

Such a pretty girl having to work with inhuman editors makes me really sad. ; _ ;
Working with three hours of sleep per day is not normal. Saying the Japanese are hard-working is an understatement - salarymen seldom take out their vacations and work overtime most days - but a person who works, so that others (the readers) can have a great time, should enjoy doing her work. Working should be fun and relaxing for her. I know being a mangaka isn't easy and it's actually a fact that even the successful ones have little free time (not to even mention aspiring artists) but I'd much rather see her doing something else then. It's like knowing how your clothes were made by underpaid children in some underground factory. If I find out that some of my most admired manga artists (Kentaro Miura, Hiroaki Samura, Hiroya Oku) have sleep deprivation, I'm fully willing to let them take breaks and give out a chapter a month. Although, they sometimes really don't release more than one chapter monthly.

Hmm, I've met many female manga editors and even interviewed some. However, I do agree that it would be rather unimaginable for Japanese females calling others "maggots." |

This seems like it might be the beginning of a creator backlash against abusive or unfair editors. I can't imagine Raikou and Shinjo are the only ones who have dealt with this sort of thing. In the coming weeks we may see many more creators open up about their experiences. If so, that will hopefully lead to more respect for artists and less editorial abuse. I'm sure the only reason the editors do it is because they think no one will know. If there's more transparency, the problem will get better.

While not as stellar as Rumiko Takahashi or Gosho Aoyama (both also Shogakukan's), Raiku and Shinjo are established, popular mangaka who have solid fanbases. I can't imagine what would happen (or have happened) on rookie mangaka.

Now, if she were an ugly girl, it wouldn't matter right? ¬_¬ I can understand the difficulties that an artist and an editor would have in such a series; often, the artist may want something that does not fit the magazine, such as a specific direction. These magazines are out there to make money, after all. However, how these artists are treated is... well, inhumanely by any standards, truly. |
