Y'know, I rented this back in my early anime days, and I don't remember it being bad.

Of course, I can't seem to remember anything about it, either- the article didn't even ring any bells. Repressed memory, or just a forgettable title getting better marks than it should due to my lack of experience at the time? I'll probably never know, since I'm not really inclined to watch it again.

It's probably the fact that I'm as much into cheesy b-movies as I am into anime, but I gotta tell ya, I look forward to these Buried Garbage segments more than I do the Buried Treasure ones. Wink

For something that was supposedly ubiquitous in the early American days of anime, I somehow never got to see this. Laughing

Fans of the cult classic film Riki-Oh aka Story of Ricky may be interested to hear that the original Dog Soldier manga is the creation of Tetsuya Saruwatari, the inspired genius who created the Riki-Oh manga (the film is a very faithful adaptation of the first three volumes...there are 12 volumes in all). What this means is that the Dog Soldier manga, much like Riki-Oh, is ludicrously gory and violent. Whether it's tying grenades to bunny rabbits, fighting a bear while naked, getting crucified (also while naked), or carving up The Incredible Hulk, Dog Soldier is mindblowingly insane. It's a shame that the only official English manga release of Saruwatari's manga was the first six volumes of Tough. I want the other 36. Sad

Since actually seeing Dog Soldier may prove rather difficult, curious and intrepid adventurers may wish to listen to this scene-for-scene synopsis, featuring guest commentary by Neil Nadelman, who had the honor and privilege of translating this nightmarish gem.

Well, that was horrible. I'm still wondering what title he saw that was worse than this one?

I remember reading an interview with some suit when the English dub came out where he claimed that Dog Soldier was this under appreciated classic and the only reason it didn't take on in the US was because it was released as a subtitle. And his great new dub was going to blow the minds of American otaku and make everyone like it.
I guess that didn't happen.

If you like Dog Soldier's take on Rambo, don't miss Go Nagai's amazing Rambo-Sensei! It's also terrible, but in that Go Nagai way that the kids seem to like.

Justin, is it true that CPM got Dog Soldier, Crystal Triangle, and some other awful early OVA releases as compensation after Sony yanked their release of Minna Agechau?

Remember that time you stabbed me in the chest? Yeah, good times.

Speaking of which, where exactly was she stabbed? Right in the center of her shirt? Because I didn't see any bleeding in that lengthy exposition. Not to mention the other guy... "John. My mind is going. Daisy, Daisy..."

Oh, man... this reminds me of another manga I found while perusing the web, but I can't remember the name of it. (Not GTO.) If I find it, I'll post it here. Awful stuff.

That was quite the epic knife battle :/ ....I just wonder how someone wearing a white shirt could get stabbed and not have any blood showing.

I want to buy whatever stain remover she's using!

Wait, so the same writer who did Full Metal Alchemist did Urotsukudoji?

My mind is officially blown.

I put forward the same theory last year—see Justin's response two posts below it.
