I can't help but notice that there is a lot less outrage when a harem story involves one girl surrounded by a bunch of attractive guys.

Why should there be?

The "One Girl surrounded by Lots of Guys" or "Reverse Harem" still feels fresh.

Since Reverse Harems aren't exactly common . . .

I don't know, they're both kind of annoying. The one thing that I can say about reverse harem is that the harem members seem less likely to strip and throw themselves at the protagonist, or somehow get her face in their groins. But maybe I'm just not reading the "right" stories...

That's because a "true" harem is still relatively rare in shoujo manga, and when it does happen (see: Ouran Host Club recently), people start to grumble about it.

It also depends a lot on the setup. Shoujo series tend to be set up as "trials" that a main couple are forced to overcome--regardless of how many people are actually interested in the heroine, it usually comes down to a one-on-one couple fairly soon--whereas shounen harems are a bit like a buffet, where the series ends right as the hero decides whether he wants the lamb or the chicken this evening. Shoujo takes you through the course of the meal itself.

Well put. I was actually just taking a dig at some of the hypocrites who decry traditional harem anime as sexist and degrading, but say nothing when the protagonist of the story is a girl.

I think criticizing a show as being a "harem anime" is too simple-minded. I resent the fact that some shows I've liked over the years would fall under this negative labeling- Ranma, Tenchi Muyo... uhm, actually, that's all I can think of right now. But I hope you get the point. I just hate the hypocrisy. BTW, Ouran is a great show!

Tenchi is, from what I've heard, something of an exception to the rule. I think it's stuff like Maburaho, the Kyoto trilogy, and Shuffle! that the harem hatahs like myself deride and ridicule. No offense to anyone who likes them, but I am not, never have been, and never will be any proponent of these types of shows. IMO, with a few exceptions, they truly are "all the same".
